Pelissier, Yuhasz hope to keep commission posts

More churches going green, cutting carbon footprint

CHAPEL HILL Instead of giving up the typical Lenten sacrifices coffee, soda and spirits congregants of United Church of Chapel Hill went on a carbon fast several years ago. The 40-day experiment was designed to help congregants think more thoughtfully about how their carbon footprint might press more lightly on the earth. Co-pastors Jill and Richard Edens gave their congregants energy-efficient compact fluorescent bulbs, passed around ceramic mugs at post-service coffee hour and talked about lifestyle choices that took energy consumption into account. But their efforts are not just about getting on the solar-powered eco-train. They are deeply connected to their faith. Theres no question that reliance on fossil fuels alone is not going to go away. HILLSBOROUGH Two Orange County Commissioners, Ber nadette Pelissier and Steve Yuhasz, have indicated they plan to run for reelection to their seats on the board. Yuhasz already is facing a challenger for his District 2 seat on the board, and Pelissier said shes heard rumors that someone might be r unning against her but didnt know if anyone was planning to file. The filing period begins at noon on Monday and ends at noon on Feb. 29. The primar y is scheduled for May 8, but one-stop voting begins on April 19. These stark images of a Klan rally and the 1963 March on Washington and many other unpublished images appear in Courage in the Moment: The Civil Rights Struggle, 1961-1964, a collection of 100 photos of the civil rights movement in Chapel Hill. They were shot by Jim Wallace when he was a photographer at The Daily Tar Heel. Most of the photos featured in the cof feetable book are previously unpublished. In the early 1960s, the small, fourpaged DTH, which was often packed with other newswor thy stories having nothing to do with civil rights, left Wallace with extra photos.
