WHITE, BREWSTER, SCHWANK, BROWNE,COSTA, FERLO, EARLL, PIPPY, FARNESE AND BRUBAKER, MAY 9, 2012INTRODUCED AND ADOPTED, MAY 9, 2012A RESOLUTIONDesignating May 15 through June 15, 2012, as "Tourette SyndromeAwareness Month" in Pennsylvania.WHEREAS, An estimated three in every 1,000 children betweensix and 17 years of age in the United States and thisCommonwealth are diagnosed with Tourette Syndrome, aneurobiological, genetic condition which has no cure; andWHEREAS, Tourette Syndrome is a lifelong developmentaldisability that begins before a child reaches 18 years of ageand affects children and adults of all races and ethnicities;andWHEREAS, Individuals with Tourette Syndrome are affected bytics, which are involuntary, rapid, sudden movements orvocalizations that occur repeatedly; andWHEREAS, Individuals with Tourette Syndrome face periodicchanges in the nature and severity of their tics, as thesesymptoms wax and wane and change without forewarning; andWHEREAS, Individuals with Tourette Syndrome frequently have

co-occurring conditions that further complicate their care anddiagnosis, including attention deficit disorder, attentiondeficit hyperactivity disorder, obsessive-compulsive disorder,mood disorders, learning disabilities, handwriting difficulties,executive function disorder and sensory processing disorder; andWHEREAS, Individuals with Tourette Syndrome are frequentlymisunderstood by their families, educators, the community andeven by medical professionals due to their ever-changingsymptoms which at times seem controllable; andWHEREAS, Tourette Syndrome has historically beenmisinterpreted and considered to be a condition of emotionaldisturbance instead of chemical biology; andWHEREAS, Individuals with Tourette Syndrome are often teasedand not accepted by their peers and the general public; andWHEREAS, Children with Tourette Syndrome are oftendisciplined for manifestations of their disability by educatorswho fail to understand the child's inability to control his orher tics and that the child may be delayed in his or hermaturity and emotional responses; andWHEREAS, Individuals with Tourette Syndrome facediscrimination from educators, friends, family, employers,coworkers and the judicial system while dealing with theirunpredictable disorder and uncertain future; andWHEREAS, Schools are required to make accommodations tosupport students with Tourette Syndrome to be successful intheir education program, but many schools often focus only onthe behavioral or emotional component of the disorder and failto notice learning disabilities, sensory integration needs,handwriting issues and organizational issues as being related toTourette Syndrome; and20120SR0315PN2183
