The Dred Scott Decision (1857)
The U.S. Supreme Court declared that people o African descent (whether or not they were slaves)were not protected by the Constitution, could never become citizens and couldn’t sue in court.The Supreme Court also declaredthat the U.S. Congress can’t prohibitslavery in federal territories and thatthe government couldn’t take slavesfrom their owners without due process.
U.S. Civil War (1861-1865)
In the spring of 1861, decades of tensionsbetween the northern and southern United Statesover issues including states' rights versus federalauthority, westward expansion and slaveryexploded into the American Civil War. Theelection of the anti-slaveryRepublican Abraham Lincolnas president in 1860 causedseven southern states tosecede from the Union toform the ConfederateStates of America.
