DESCRI?TION
2.01
The
KS-19557
detector is a nuclear explosiondetection system activated by
the
gammaradiation pelse released by the detonation of anuclear device. The detection system consists ofa detection unit, an electrical equipment cabinet, and a connecting cable.
2.02
The detection unit (Fig.
1)
is shock-mountedwithin a shield assembly (Fig.
2}
which isshock-mounted above ground. The detection unitand shield assembly
are
designed to withstandrepeated blast overpressures of 50 pounds persquare inch. The shield also provides adequateinsulation
to
prevent
high
temperatures
fromdamaging the scintillation plastic
in
the
detection
unit. The
scintillation plastic can
withstand
temperatures
up to
60oC
for extended periods;however, the
temperature
of
the
plastic
must
neverexceed
70°C.
2.03
Activation of the detection
unit
is causedby a gamma radiation pulse. The radiationpulse reacts with the scintillation plastic, producinga light pulse which is picked up by a photomultipliertube. After converting
the
light pulse to an
