The secrets of Kells , 2009 , Tomm Moore.

The Secret of Kells is about Viking attackers destroying a monks village and a young monk finding his way past the walls of safety and into the real world.

This Irish feature wont impress anyone with its character drawings, which arent much more detailed or emotionally nuanced than youd find in a 60s holiday special by Rankin/Bass. But the backgrounds are another story. As richly hued and ornately patterned as their ninth-century models, they remind us what stunning imagery once resulted from nothing more than a pen and all the time in the world (Jones ,2009). The amount of detail that has gone into that world is mind blowing (as seen in figure 2 ) and not just because the use of old carvings and stone statues as influences could not be any better portrayed in the design. The characters werent super-unique as, say, characters from a Disney film but they had a different feel and look that suits the world that they are from. A collection of great moments, rushed together too quickly, leaving the backbone too frail (especially as the film sprints at epic pace to its ending). While the voice acting suffers from being dreadfully flat, a constant reminder it's only an animated film.(Univarn , 2010) The start of the film is not very clear, not in sound quality but more in terms of mumbling, so the bit of info at the start gets lost; there are other parts of the film where it does this as well but the start is the more noticeable of them .

Overall I have given this film 5/5 stars as it was unique with the way it showed that world with pattern and colour but it was a very interesting story line as well.
