95 years ago during the course of the Russian Revolution, Lenin sat down and reviewed Marxist writing up to that point on the nature of the state and the tasks for Marxists in relation to it. Today in a period of revolutionary upheavals in many parts of the world these lessons are as valuable as ever, enriched by the experience of successive generations of Marxists such as that of the Allende government in Chile in the 1970s and others. More recently we have seen attempts to suppress student protests, the police marching against cuts and discussing the right to strike, as well as the recent POA walkout on May 10th. An understanding of the modern British state is vital for Marxists as well as adopting the correct transitional approach to such matters to aid the struggle for Socialism Suggested reading:
Recent articles from Socialism Today and the Socialist on the right to protest, police reforms, POA walkouts etc. VI Lenin: State and Revolution Taaffe, Grant & Walsh: The State: A Warning VI Lenin: Left-wing Communism: An Infantile Disorder Karl Marx: The Civil War in France Ken Smith: A Civil War Without Guns Lynn Walsh: Marxism and the State - An Exchange (http://www.socialistparty.org.uk/pamphlets/state2006/) The books & pamphlets above are available from Socialist Books (www.socialistbooks.org.uk) and from the stall at the school.
