Do you know the process of how a volcano forms? A geologic theory called plate tectonics states that the Earths crust is broken into various rigid plates. Well, they float on the surface of the planet. Those plates move because of the intense pressure created underneath them by the movement of currents. They carry heat energy from the center of the planet to the surface. This pressure makes the plates move toward or away from each other and past each other in a horizontal motion. When a continental plate and an oceanic plate join or move toward each other, then volcanoes form on land near coastal areas. Because the oceanic plate is denser, it sinks beneath the surface. The extremely high temperatures and pressure melt the rock and turn it into hot floating magma. Next, it rises toward the surface and when the magma reaches the crust, it collects in a magma reservoir. It will be forced up ward through crack in the Earths crust when pressure inside the reservoir exceeds that of the overlying rock.
