Big shots are ony little shots who keep shooting
- Christopher MarleyThis is an appopriate quote for job seekers today, workers that seek career advancement, studentsthat want to finish school, authors floundering in rejection notices, and inventors that want to see theirdesigns help the world and make money. The man quoted above lived into the middle of the 20th C. And I wonder what he would say in the21st. Not only an author and editor, he was a great humorist andf writer of poetry and plays. DuringWorld War I, he worked at Doubleday on Long Island, earning him a garden in his honor today.Having studied in both USA and UK, he worked for several famous companies and helped to editmany respected reference materials as well as to write his own prolific material. One of the favorite books in my collection is by Morley; it is an interesting anthology of essaysconcerning the
Three Hours for Lunch Club
that he founded. The essays are old, but many of thethemes and humorous comments may be applied today. In tis, Morley resembles Mark Twain andWill Rogers. He also helped to start the Baker Street Irregulars club that still publishes a newsletter inthe 21st C.This organization is active in Nassau County in promoting clean drinking water and preserving naturalhabitats and it programs add to the activities of the public gardens in North Hills and Old Westbury.Heping to preserve the habitat of pines and oaks also protects wiidlife that includes a number ofthreatened species.Justin Bieber made a public service announcement to boost the programming in Nassau Countymiddle and high schools. Itadvocates against bullying and sexting. Although this recordedannouncement was in answer to sanctions levied against his recording label for failing to meet countyfire codes when an overflow crowd showed up at an autograph event, Mr. Beiber is using his fameand notoriety to help these fight two major problems that dog teens and pre-teens today. The unsafe overflow crowd scene occured at Roosevelt Field Mall, about five miles south of OldWestbury and a popular venue for shopping and other activties. This national attraction was landscaped on the former estate of a US Steel executive, John Phipps.
The mansion itself is maintained as a state landmark and houses special events, dining, and a giftshop. "One visitor has called it Heaven so close to NYC." Some visitors return in every season of theyear to enjoy the concerts, auto shows, teas, wellness programs, and the Christmas Tour.Educational programs are also offered and on Fridays in Spring and Summer, special workshops forchildren are presented about native wildlife and plants. Some visitors have complained that the admittance fee is expensive, but children 6 and younger areadmitted free of charge and the entrance is just $5.00 for ages 7-12, $10 for older. Seniors arediscounted at age 62. The guided tours through the mansion and eight separate English Gardens areexquisite, at no additional cost. In addition, self-guided tour programs are printed in severallanguages. This attraction rivals that of Tennessee's Cheekwood of Nashville.Old Westbury is in the center of a number of training facilities, from career institutes to Universities.Culinary Academy of Long Island - Star Career Academy

Of several schools, NYIT offers a School of Osteopathic Medicine as an alternative to allopathicmedicine in America, along with a school of Allied Health Professions and Nursing.
Research and development is performed at NYIT in a number of fields that include health andsustainability. DNA and nutrition research are top priorities. Further, three particular InterdisciplinaryCenters beyond the health related schools are tasked with some of this work and include theCenter for Metropolitan Sustainability,Center for Global Health, andCenter for Gerontology and Geriatrics.Nassau and Suffolk Counties are particularly involved in the Long Island Carbon Footprint Projectunder the Center for Metropolitan Sustainability.Sustainability in cities is going to increase in importance as metro centers and megaplexes growlarger in the 21st C. Urban centers will expand, as they have begun to do under Urban Revalizationprograms across the nation have gained momemtum, especially since the 1980s. Multiuse buildingsthat contain living spaces, retail, and services companies are becoming the norm. As this occurs, theneed for more effective, inexpensive, fast mass transit increases. While the Long Island Railroad andbuses are acceptable, many Long Island communities are at least two mies or more from stations andterminals and this might be addressed, particulary as some of the older population gives up drivingand young career people want an end to traffic congestion. Many of these Wealthiest Towns are located near the large job market available in NYC and areas ofConnecticut and New Jersey. The wealth of these towns, though making housing inside theirboundaries pricey, may draw new tourist trade to look at the architecture and enjoy the natural
