Sight Words
Successful readers use a number oftools to help them understand texts. One of the most effective and powerfulreading tools that parents andteachers can help children develop issight word recognition.

When a child isable to grasp and identify sight wordshe is well on his way to becoming athriving reader.
 What are Sight Words?

This list ofwords includes the, a, is, of, to, in,and, I, you, and that. Think about thenumber of times that you have seenthese words in a

piece of readingmaterial.

attempted tosound out walk ever time youencountered it in your reading. Thenimagine that you do not know the wordthe. You cannot use the picturesaccompanying a text to help youdecipher this word because it cannotbe illustrated.Using phonics or picture readingskills for words like these is uselessand fruitless for readers, especiallythose who are in the early stages ofdeveloping their decoding skills.Because they are used so often it isimportant that readers be able torecognize these words on sight (hence
the term “sight words”).
When a reader masters sight words sheis able to understand at least half ofthe words in a particular text. Byeliminating the need to decode thesewords, the reader is able to focus onthose that are more difficult and less
