Merry Christmas, 2008 Pg. 3
Ray Gun Revival magazine Issue 49, December 2008
I
t is Christmas Eve as I write this. The snowis deep on the ground. It certainly looks likewhat I think Christmas looks like. The streetoutside is completely quiet in my small town, and we have our own silent night. We have peace on earth, or at least in onesmall town in Wisconsin. Aah. I can feel thestress leading up to the holidays melt away.It is a great feeling.I recently had occasion to corrospond brieflywith SF author Dave Wolverton. I signed upfor his e-mail list, and he said he liked thename of our humble little publication. Hesaid he’d just written a space opera novellafor Orson Scott Card’s
Intergalactic MedicineShow
. Then he something that gets the heartof everything we’ve been working toward forthe past two and a half years. “So here’s aquestion for you: does it seem to you thatthere actually is something of a revival of thegenre?”When we started looking at the landscape inlate 2005, there wasn’t much in the way of space opera out there for us to look at. Westarted making preparations for Ray GunRevival in January of 2006 and opened ourvirtual doors that July. Our one goal was todo our small part to revive the genre. The timing couldn’t have been better. Thatyear, editors David G. Hartwell & KathrynCramer gathered together an anthologycalled
The Space Opera Renaissance
, and itwas a tome. weighing in at nearly 1000 pages,it examines space opera from the beginningup to the present day. It’s a Who’s Who of space opera authors, from Leigh Brackett toJohn C. Wright. It didn’t end there. 2008 saw the release of
The New Space Opera
, edited by GardnerDozois and Jonathan Strahan. Gardner Dozoisis a legend and Strahan is an up-and-comerwho continues to impress. At RGR, 2008 was our best ever. We published40 short stories. We featured artists from theUSA, the UK, Canada, Mexico, Germany, andChina. We introduced film reviews from PaulChristian Glenn, and added book reviewsedited and written by Matthew Winslowand featuring newcomers Steve Davidsonand Donald Jacob Uitvlugt. We added newSlushmasters to the team. We published allor part of new original serial novels. Whoknows what 2009 will bring?I’m going to keep this short to get this oiut.Merry Christmas from Ray Gun Revivalmagazine!
