During this class we will review how scanners work, thevarious types and their associated costs, and theparameters around scanning for genealogical recordpurposes.
WMGS Program Schedule
The following programs will be held in the GrandRapids Public Library in the Ryerson Auditorium.Meetings begin at 1:30 pm, starting with WMGS businessand followed by the speaker. Admission is free andeveryone is welcome! Parking is free at the Library onSaturdays. Remember to have your parking ticketvalidated in the Library’s main lobby. Refreshments areserved after the speaker’s presentation. Books andsupplies may be purchased from the Sales Table beforeand after the programs.
June 9, 2011Finding Grandma’s Polish Ancestors
This presentation will focus on how to find the vitalrecords for your ancestors in the “old country.” SteveSzabados will discuss how he used maps and gazetteersto find his grandmother's birthplace, and then how hefound the Polish records for his grandmother’sancestors. He also describes what sources he used totranslate the records. He will also discuss sources for therecords for a few other countries. He will share someresources that go beyond the traditional documents thathave enabled him to gather documents, pictures andinformation that has enriched his understanding andknowledge of his heritage.

The Writers’ Workshops are designed to help andsupport each other’s desire to write about our familieswith a kind eye and lots of humor. Everyone is welcome.We informally discuss questions relevant to eachperson’s work, provide helpful, non-judgmental feedback on writer’s current projects and have fun learning abouteach other and our research. Everyone is welcome to bring their latest writing project rather than thesuggested topic for the meeting. June 19: Your own “Ethical Will” (We write willsto leave tangible property to ourchildren. An “Ethical Will” includesintangibles from the things you’velearned in your life you’d like to give tothem. July 17: Why I love or hate Summer heat.August 21: My favorite website for research or theone that has helped me the most in mywriting.The workshops are held at the Dominican Center on thecorner of East Fulton and Lakeside Drive. The Grand Rapids Public Library will hold their nextLock-In on July 29, from 5:30-10:00 p.m. This is a greatopportunity for people who are new to genealogy toget help from members of WMGS. As always, printingis free and Ancestry.com, Fold3.com and NEHGS arefree. Registration at www.grpl.org/train is normallyopen 30 days prior to the event. This is a very popularevent with a long waiting list. If you register for thisevent and later learn that you are unable to attend,PLEASE call the GRPL to let them know you won’t beattending and give someone else the chance to attend.

A tiny force of115 men, most of them from Berrien County, defendedtheir post against 5,000 Confederate cavalry.
