Goosewatcher Guidelines for Park Activities
May 16, 2012Hello, my name is Benjamin Hecht and I am the attorney for Goosewatch NYC. I look forward tomeeting and assisting you in our shared goal of protecting the geese that seasonally reside in New York City’s Public Parks.As you know by now, a federal agency has been contracted by the State of New York to come in to ourparks and remove the geese. This means that the roundups, at this time, are authorized legal activityconducted by state and federal authorities. Keep the following guidelines in mind whenever you arevolunteering for Goosewatch NYC:1.
Review park rules and regulations (which can vary from park to park)
before
you arrive on thescene. Violations of the park rules may lead to personal civil or criminal liability.

While this may be common sense, never interfere with any local, state, or federal authority oremployee. Interfere includes not just physical interference, but also threatening to physicallyintervene or hurt the authority. That can lead to jail time. While it may be emotional to witnessthe roundups, resist any urges to act in such as a way as to stop or prevent the activities of thoseperforming the roundups.

If you are instructed to do something by any public or park authority, abide by their instructions.

Try not to go into the parks by yourself, especially at night. If you do, let someone know whereyou are and use common sense.If you aren’t careful, even the most well intentioned efforts to protect the geese from any harmful,distasteful or even horrific treatment won’t insulate you from personal civil and criminal liability.
