INTRODUCTION
The learning competencies of the mathematics program of the 2002Secondary Education Curriculum include
program competencies expected of a secondary school graduate;
core competencies which contain the minimum essentials for eachcurriculum year; and
competencies for Extended Learning which are additionalcompetencies for advanced classes.Progression of competencies is by year level, unit to unit, across year levels and from simple to complex. The competencies reflect the strategies suchas establishing relationships between quantities, looking for pattern, makingprediction, etc. which emphasize higher order thinking skills.

PROGRAM COMPETENCIES IN MATHEMATICS
After undergoing the Mathematics program, the secondary school learner shall have developed the following competencies:1.Demonstrate skill in1.1using measuring instruments;1.2reading and interpreting graphs;1.3reading, simplifying and evaluating mathematical expressions/equations; and1.4using Information and Communication Technology (ICT)2.Demonstrate
investigative attitude, analytical and creative thinking
systematic counting, estimating, approximating
sound reasoning
spatial perception and visualization3.Manifest ability in3.1communicating and translating ideas to/from verbal and symbolicforms;3.2visualizing abstract ideas using concrete models; and3.3applying problem-solving skills to daily life situations.4.Appreciate the role/application of mathematics in real life5.Manifest competence for further study/obtaining employment.

A.Measurement
1.Demonstrate knowledge and skill in measurement and the use of measuring devices, conversion of units of measurement and solving reallife problems1.1illustrate the development of measurement from the primitive to thepresent international system of units1.2measure:
length
weight
volume
temperature
time
angle1.3express relationships between two quantities using ratios1.4convert measurements from one unit to another 1.5solve problems involving measurement
B. Real Number System
1.Describe the real number system: integers, rational numbers, irrationalnumbers, real numbers1.1describe opposite quantities in real life1.2determine the absolute value of a number 1.3solve simple absolute value equations using the number line1.4perform fundamental operations on integers:
