1A CEREMONIAL RESOLUTION16-208IN THE COUNCIL OF THE DISTRICT OF COLUMBIAMarch 7, 2006To recognize and acknowledge the legendary talents of Chuck Brown as one of the city’sbest-known musical artist who created a special genre of music that has world-widerecognition and contributes to the cultural experiences of residents in the District of Columbia.WHEREAS, Chuck Brown was born in Gaston, North Carolina and at an earlyage moved to the District of Columbia;WHEREAS, Chuck Brown is recognized for his musical genius that has brought internationalattention to the District of Columbia;WHEREAS, Chuck Brown is the godfather for the original musical sound known as Go-Go;WHEREAS, Chuck Brown began his musical career in the early 1960's and performed withwell-known signer Jerry Brown and his group, the Earls of Rhythm;WHEREAS, Chuck Brown in 1965 gained experience with Latin music as a member of thegroup called the Los Latinos where he acquired a keen interest in this different type of syncopatedrhythm;WHEREAS, Chuck Brown began experimenting with new combinations of musical soundsthat included Jazz, African and Latin beats which evolved into an institutionalized Go-Go sound;WHEREAS, Chuck Brown in 1971 had the first hit record for his newly-created soundentitled “We the People” later followed in 1972 by another hit recording known as “Blow theWhistle”;WHEREAS, Chuck Brown introduced his musical talents to even larger audiences on aninternational scale with the release of the song “Go Go Swing” and continued to expand the list of hit records during the past 3 decades;WHEREAS, Chuck Brown in 2002 released an acclaimed double DVD and companion CDthat include the documentary “From the Belly of the Drum” that features some of the musicindustry’s best known performers;
