Interior Design
We must have an eye to what is good and bad design- Perhaps one of the most promising line Ive heared; and just one of the moral lessons Ive learned during my internship at Grupo Santamaria. Since the objective of the OJT is to give a real experience on the design industry, This aforementioned Interior Design firm gives a beyond expected lessons to me. Aside from inspirational senior and junior designers, The office itself is a hub for design knowledge. Besides, my first week is all about material information- from fabric to laminates and from wood to natural stones. Along with this informations, The socialization also deeps as I collaborated with other Interns from the Holy spirit College. Three ID students where some of the tasks are shared, for an instance, is the sourcing process, CADD plotting and site inspections. Moreover, it gives me an idea as it can actually happens in a proffesional practice. Principal designer, Ms. Santamaria and three junior designers shares their works to us. These hands-on mentors discussed and makes us involve to their residential and commercial projects. Where my favorite part is the set-up and turn-overs, those times is very informative as I gained a lot of lessons, from on-site problems and hands-on styling.
Since one of my interest is furniture designing, Locsin international makes me feel free to create an avant-garde design; as they office requires a unique and an out-of-the-box ideas. The first day is all about material familiarization, And I personally admire this furniture firm as they create stunning pieces made out of indigenous materials. Together with my co-intern from UP, we passed two designs of either furniture or lighting piece. We work on the office just beside the furniture showroom, making us inspired during sketching. There were also times that the half of the day is alienated to office works, where our Mentor, Ms. Janiz discusses all about the works in the company as well as all the aspects in furniture industry like the marketing plan and importing process. She also tell us the experiences even good or bad in the corporate aspects, and give us advices to be an effective employee as a designer based to the companys decorum. These lessons were very essential to adapt, aside from technical speaking, but morally as we must be very unique, and be experimental to established our own identity.
During lunch break, we are free to seat on the chairs and take photos.
Corporation
Architecture is a very significant aspect to understand when dealing on interior design. This is my personal observation during my internship at Touch of Home Corporation. Since the company is engaged on residential projects, the works goes through houses and mansions planning. And for knowing that we(with my co-intern) are both interior design student, they also extended our task to the interior of the project. Which we do our very best to give them an idea of how ID plans in terms of color, texture, and all the elements of designs. Which results to a good feedback from the head Architect, Mr. Bunag. It also give us opportunity to experience collaboration with architects and contractors. In the end, deeper understanding on architectural principles were given, along that space planning, Built-in furnishing, and the over-all interior design must collaborate and considers the architecture of the structure- the forms, areas, and dimensions.
