conjunction "and" + prefixed preposition "in" + again we have the noun "Torah" + a third masculine singular pronominal suffix

"his". Mix this all together and I come up with the translation "and in His Torah" I had to look this verb up, it turns out to be a qal imperfect third person masc singular. This verb has an interesting range of meaning.. moan, growl, utter, speak, muse (only poet.) (soliloquize) meditate, muse. This would be a very interesting verb to do a word study on at some point. I will go with the translation "he meditates

These two words (as stated above ) mean continually. "and in His Torah, he meditates continually" would be a good translation (IMHO), but so would "by day and (by) night... I think that the English reader gets pretty much the same understanding as the Hebrew reader did by this figure of speech. I prefer, whenever possible to stick as close to the Hebrew as possible , although often some variation in necessary in order for the verses to make sense in English. I was going to go with the term "continually" in my translation, but at the last minute I switched to "by day and by night". I got to thinking that continually doesn't necessarily carry the connotation of "all during the day". I can continually check the air in my car tires, but that doesn't mean I do it all the time during each day... it could mean I do it a few times a week. Translation (don't include the parts in parenthesis): But his joy is in the Torah (Law, Instruction) of God (YHWH) and in His Torah (God's Torah) he meditates by day and by night (continually). Application 1. This verse is an excellent admonition to not only avoid the bad influences mentioned in verse 1, but to find my influence in Gods word, His Torah. 2. What a pleasure it is, and a gift from God Himself, that he grants us the ability to Delight... to find joy in His Word. 3. The Bible isn't a book to be placed on our bookcase or on our desks.. It is to be meditated on continually during the day.
