Officials defend move,calling it ‘civil rightsissue of our times’

BALTIMORE — The leader of the National Association forthe Advancement of ColoredPeople stressed this week that hisorganization’s support of marriagerights for gays and lesbians isconsistent with its broader mission tofight discrimination.“We make this statementtoday because it is the legacy andresponsibility of the NAACP to speakup on the civil rights issue of our times,”said NAACP President BenjaminTodd Jealous during a Monday newsconference at the organization’snational headquarters. “We are bothproud of our history and challengedby it — challenged to never allowthreats to equality for all people underthe law to go uncontested.”Jealous’ comments came two daysafter the NAACP Board of Directorsendorsed extending marriage rightsto same-sex couples during theirquarterly meeting in Miami. Jealousbecame emotional as he discussed hisparents who had to get married in theDistrict of Columbia in 1966 becauseMaryland did not allow interracialmarriage — the U.S. Supreme Court

President Obama’s endorsement of marriage rights for same-sex couples hasgenerated a wave of enthusiasm among

donors maxed out their contributions tohis campaign prior to the announcement,anecdotal evidence suggests an increase

who might not be as politically engaged.Andy Tobias, who’s gay and treasurerof the Democratic National Committee,said supporters had already madesignificant contributions to the campaignbefore Obama announced that he hadcompleted his 19-month evolution onsame-sex marriage. According to a reportin The Advocate, Tobias has raised morethan $500,000 as a bundler for the Obamacampaign as of late last year.“Recognizing how much is at stake, thecommunity was already very generous,”Tobias said. “This just added to theenthusiasm.”Kevin Jennings, who’s gay and formerlyheaded the Education Department’s Officeof Safe and Drug-Free Schools, similarlysaid he saw only a few new donations afterthe president’s announcement, noting manyObama supporters had already given all theycould.
