This Literacy Matters comes to you at a time o the biggestreorm o the urther education and training sector, andliteracy and numeracy are centre stage. Literacy and numeracyare seen as necessary components or learning or lie andemployability or lie. While change brings great opportunityor the sector, it also makes some people anxious about whatthese changes will mean or them. Tutors are particularly concerned about their uture. Readmore about their concerns in a very interesting article romEilis Roche, Adult Literacy Organiser in Cork (page 8). In thistime o change, learners are tutors’ best allies. I learners aregiven the space to speak, they will praise tutors’ work andwant to see them happily settled within their workplace. Learners’ voices need to be at the table where decisions arenow being made about the urther education and trainingsector. New structures at local level namely the LETBs shouldhave a seat or an adult learner, similar to that which exists orother learners in higher education. NALA is striving to achievethis and would welcome the support o members in makingthis happen. In this edition, we also have interesting articles, such as thegreat work being done on the Roma Families Learning Projectin Clare (page 6) and the participants in our rst episodeo our 2012 TV programme A Story with Me in it (page 4).Remember to tune into RTÉ ONE on Monday 30 April or therst episode! We hope you enjoy this edition and please contact us i youhave news that you would like us to include in our next edition. You can email us at media@nala.ie Inez Bailey,Director
