Churches Together in Shaftesbury PentecostalService at Shaftesbury Abbey
On Sunday 27th of Mayat 4pm, there will be the annual Pentecostal Service for Churches Together in Shaftesbury at the Abbey. Our worship, this year will take the theme 'Unity in Diversity' aswe recall the joyful outpouring of the Holy Spirit on thedisciples which gave birth to the universal church we knowtoday. At the service, we will pray for ourselves asChristians and for all Christians across the world, that wemay continue to grow together in the fellowship of the HolySpirit and the love of God, proclaiming Jesus as Our Lordand Saviour. The nation and our town will becelebrating the Queen's Diamond Jubilee on June 3rd withmany parties and I'm sure many of you will be attendingdifferent events. Our Sunday Mass that weekend will bepraying for her in a particular way and refer to her and theevent with Scripture readings and prayers especiallychosen for the event by our Bishops' Conference.
The Queens Diamond Jubilee Community Lunch
ACommunity Lunch has been organised on Tuesday 5thJune at Shaftesbury Town Hall to celebrate the QueensDiamond Jubilee. It is intended for those who wouldotherwise be spending the day alone and who would enjoya meal and some company. Appeal Next Weekend: St Barnabas Society
Nextweekend, 2-3rd June, there will be an appeal at the endthe Masses. We occasionally have such one-off appealsfrom organisations to let the inform us of their work. TheSt Barnabas Society (formerly the 'Converts Aid Society')supports non-Catholic clergy converting to Catholicism.Presently 10% of all priests in England and Wales and20% of all active priests of the Plymouth Diocese are suchclergy converts and we our them a great deal. Blessed Sacrament Procession: 10th June 5pm
For some years now in our parish the First Holy CommunionSunday has been preceded by a Blessed SacramentProcession on Corpus Christi. In addition to be awonderful devotional celebration for the whole parish thishas been an important way for our FHC children to focusthemselves on the reality of Christ's presence in theEucharist. The procession will be at 5pm on 10th Juneand the FHC Mass will be Sunday 17th June.
First Holy Communion Mass 17th June, 11am
Four children from our parish will be making their First HolyCommunion this year. As always, it will be good to have agood crowd of parishioners to support them at the event.Please come along.
Sunday July 22nd in the gardens of Sedgehill Manor. There will be trampolining, tennis andswimming for the young at heart. Croquet andconversation for those a little older. We can providetransport (Sedgehill is 3 miles out of town). We hope thatsome of our musicians will play to us during the course of the afternoon. Do put this date in your diary, and bring apicnic and your family with you.
Bishop's Visitation 23rd-24th June
Every four years theBishop comes and makes an official visitation of theparish. Its now our turn for him to come to us again onwhat might well be his last official visit to the parish asBishop before retiring. Please come and welcome him atthe weekend's Masses, and stay for tea and coffee after the 11am Mass.
Our Bishop, Christopher Budd, is75 today (May 27) and has told us that he has thussubmitted his retirement to Rome. He has served us for 27 years and will be remembered as a gentle, kindly andaffable pastor with an easy manner. He'll remain in officeuntil his successor is appointed, a process that may takesome time as there are a number of English bishops allretiring at the same time.
Novena Prayer for New Bishop
To start our prayers for the selection of our new bishop there will be specialnovena starting this Monday, the day after the retirementage of our present bishop. The prayer will be said at theend of the Rosary after weekday Mass and will invoke anEnglishwoman, Teresa Helena Higginson, whose causefor canonisation is being considered in Rome.Ven. Teresa was a 19th Century English school teacher and mystic who combined personal ordinariness withmiraculous wonders. Booklets about her and about the"Devotion to the Sacred Head" that was revealed to her bythe Lord are for sale in the porch, 50p.
