John 1:11-13; Part 2
Now we will examine verse 12.xii. But (
δε
) as many as (
οσοι
) received (
ελαβον
) him (
αυτον
), to them gave he power to becomethe sons of God, even to them that believe on his name:xii.
οσοι

δε

ελαβον

αυτον

εδωκεν

αυτοις

εξουσιαν

τεκνα

θεου

γενεσθαι

τοις

πιστευουσιν

εις

το

ονομα

αυτου
 But (
δε
) as many as (
οσοι
) received (
ελαβον
) him (
αυτον
)As many as (
οσοι
- osoi - much, great; pronoun, the subject, plural, masculine), refers back to verse xi -his own people, Israel (
ιδιοι
-idioi - nominative - subject, plural, Masculine) , received him.Why does this tie back to verse xi? Because (
δε
) is a conjunction, and a conjunction is a word that joinssentences, clauses, phrases, or words to together, to previous thoughts or phrases. In addition, a relative pronoun connects the clause to its "antecedent" e.g., who, whom, that, which, whoever, as many as. And the antecedent, "to as", is not found in verse xii, it is found in verse xi.Then as many as who?As many as the Jews that received him as the Messiah is what the first part of the verse is referring to.But as many as received -
ελαβον
(elabon - lambano) to take in whatever manner, to embrace, to followhis instruction; to receive him as the Messiah. Now the word
ελαβον
is in the Aorist Indicative which implies past tense, and it is active, happeningnow. What this means is that as many of the Jews that embraced the Messiah, they already embraced himbefore he came in the flesh, for they were the elect, the chosen of God from the foundation of theworld. For they received him, past tense, yet, they, the chosen, receive him now; for they were his fromthe beginning. And what did they receive? Him (
αυτον
- Christ); Christ is the direct object (accusative case) of the verb, the
ελαβον
, the receiving of His chosen, His elect. Those who are not His will not receive Him, for noneseek after God, no not one (ref Romans iii. 10).Up to this point the verse is stating that, As many as his chosen receive Him (the Messiah), for theyreceived Him from the beginning, they were His from the beginning (Aorist), they are still receiving Himnow (active voice), that He (Christ) did something to them (his elect, not the world). What then was it that he did for them (his from the beginning)?
