Vaporization, sublimation, fusion, transitionof one solid phase to another, solubility ofsolids, liquids and gases in each other, chemical reactions between solids andliquids or gases, distribution of solutesbetween phases, etc are examples ofheterogeneous equilibria. They can bestudied by methods suitable for eachparticular type of equilibrium. But all ofthem can be treated from unified stand-point by means of a general principle
called “PHASE RULE”.
With the help of this principle, it is possibleto define the no. of variables controlling agiven heterogeneous equilibrium undervarious experimental conditions. It is an invaluable principle appliedextensively in the study and developmentof materials needed for variousapplications. It does not establish a quantitative relationamong those variables.
