School of Tyrannus OnlineCourse 1: The message of the GospelClass4: The Mosaic LawThe Law of Moses
The subject of the Mosaic law is a vast one. Our purpose here is twofold so the scope of the class will be limited to a brief overview where these two points are concerned. Do notthink for a minute that this study in any ways is exhaustive.These two points are the basics of what every Christian should know where the law isconcerned.
1.The Mosaic law was given as a tutor because of sin.2.The Mosaic law is pure prophecy.
10 Commandments
The 10 commandments as given in scripture are as follows:E
 xodus 20:3 Thou shalt have no other gods before me.Exodus 20:7 Thou shalt not take the name of the LORD thy God in vain; for the LORD will not hold him guiltless that taketh his name in vain.Exodus 20:4 Thou shalt not make unto thee any graven image, or any likeness of any thing that is in heaven above, or that is in the earth beneath, or that is in the water under the earth.Exodus 20:8 Remember the sabbath day, to keep it holy.Exodus 20:12 Honour thy father and thy mother: that thy days may be long upon the land which the LORD thy God giveth thee.Exodus 20:13 Thou shalt not kill.Exodus 20:14 Thou shalt not commit adultery.Exodus 20:15 Thou shalt not steal.Exodus 20:16 Thou shalt not bear false witness against thy neighbour.Exodus 20:17 Thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's house, thou shalt not covet thy neighbour's wife, nor his manservant, nor his maidservant, nor his ox, nor his ass, nor any thing that is thy neighbour's.
There were also 613 ordinances that concerned various ceremonial washings,determinations of what was considered clean and unclean etc. that were to rule the daily lives
of the Israelites. All of these were practiced literally but also were rich in symbolism. Inapplying the Law and the setting up of the sacrifices, offerings and even the tabernacle. Allthese things were full of meaning. In fact Moses was warned to follow the pattern in all thesethings so that the pattern of God and its meanings would be preserved. All of these havegreat meaning for us in the new covenant.
Hebrews 8:5 Who serve unto the example and shadow of heavenly things, as Moses wasadmonished of God when he was about to make the tabernacle: for, See, saith he, that thoumake all things according to the pattern shewed to thee in the mount.6 But now hath heobtained a more excellent ministry, by how much also he is the mediator of a better covenant,which was established upon better promises.Hebrews 9:8 The Holy Ghost this signifying, that the way into the holiest of all was not yet made manifest, while as the first tabernacle was yet standing:9 Which was a figure for thetime then present, in which were offered both gifts and sacrifices, that could not make himthat did the service perfect, as pertaining to the conscience; 10 Which stood only in meatsand drinks, and divers washings, and carnal ordinances, imposed on them until the time of reformation.Hebrews 10:1 For the law having a shadow of good things to come, and not the very image of the things, can never with those sacrifices which they offered year by year continually makethe comers thereunto perfect.Ephesians 3:3 How that by revelation he made known unto me the mystery; (as I wrote aforein few words,4 Whereby, when ye read, ye may understand my knowledge in the mystery of Christ)5 Which in other ages was not made known unto the sons of men, as it is now revealed unto his holy apostles and prophets by the Spirit;
This what Christians today, especially gentile believers, need to understand about the law.The law with its commandments and ordinances through the filter of Christ's death is purerevelation of a spiritual nature and rich in meaning. There has been a spiritual reformationthrough the death and resurrection of Jesus the Messiah. He fulfilled the law. If you couldfulfill it Jesus would not of had to die! We do not try to fullfill it ourselves. We walk in faith inthe fact that Christ has fulfilled it on our behalf. The letter of the Law was for physical peopleunder it. We walk by the Spirit of the law as those spiritually alive through faith.
2 Corinthians 3:6 Who also hath made us able ministers of the new testament; not of theletter, but of the spirit: for the letter killeth, but the spirit giveth life.Romans 7:6 But now we are delivered from the law, that being dead wherein we were held;that we should serve in newness of spirit, and not in the oldness of the letter.Romans 2:29 But he is a Jew, which is one inwardly; and circumcision is that of the heart, inthe spirit, and not in the letter; whose praise is not of men, but of God.Colossians 2:11 In whom also ye are circumcised with the circumcision made without hands,in putting off the body of the sins of the flesh by the circumcision of Christ:12 Buried with himin baptism, wherein also ye are risen with him through the faith of the operation of God, whohath raised him from the dead.13 And you, being dead in your sins and the uncircumcision of
