June 1, 2012Happy Friday Everyone,
Your child may have shared with you the news that one of their classmates lost a parentthis past weekend. I have had questions from interested people and I can tell you it istrue. The children have been a wonderful source of comfort for their friend. I am proudof them for their compassion and sensitivity. Thank you for your understanding as well.
Here we are in the final weeks of kindergarten. It’s at this time of year, that everyoneturns their attention to the imminent arrival of summer, and its carefree days with fewerdemands for our time and attention. I am finishing up our final assessments and starting towork on report cards. The final card will go home on the last half day of school. That is alsothe day that children meet their grade one teacher. It will be a brief visit and the children arealways excited when they return. We will no longer be our own little community and only ahandful of us will remain together as we move on. That can make for some melancholy. Theseearly friendships have been important and I encourage you to arrange play dates with ourfriends so we can maintain some connection. In years to come, they will roll in and out of eachothers classrooms and they’ll always have recess and lunch times to catch up with each other. We have enjoyed some very, very busy weeks. Ourlatest batch of eggs, in the new incubator, seemsto be progressing as planned. We also havewatched our Painted Lady caterpillars eat and grow, then turn into chrysalises, and now they haveemerged. We are feeding them orange slices andwater. Thanks to Gabrielle & Grant for sharingtheir butterfly habitats.

Painted Lady butterflyWe are also watching our garden plot. Eachday, a couple of children water the plantsand everyone likes to weed the space. Wevisit it every day and monitor the growth. The children are excited with our success. A fewweeks back, we brainstormed a support system for the pole beans and came up with the idea ofusing a triangular shape. Groups of children worked together connecting the ends of 2 woodenpoles with rubber bands. This week, we assembled the frame. Very soon, the plants shouldstart wrapping their vines around the poles
~ at least that’s the plan! =O
Our hall bulletin board is getting rave reviews. The message under all the plants and insectssays,
“Plant a Garden, Watch It Grow.”
We have jumped right into ourfinal unit of the year ~ ocean life.Colorful fish decorate our windowsnow and the children are reallyenjoying the huge collection of bookson the topic. There are tons ofphotos in the books and the children
