Dear Mr. Klein,
| allended your Town Hall meeting last night al the Petrides Complex. Pa: Ave
Expeditionary Learning Schoo!, brought up the busing issue in our schoo! tioned is
what we were asking all along. If a school bus is virtually empty why does it have to by pass 7th
graders going to the same location.
‘You seemed receptive to the idea if there is room on the bus that the 7th grade students can utilize
the school bus. |s there going to be a change in busing policy?

Joel,
On Wednesday night of this week, my wife and I had dinner in NY with Claude
Steele and hiz wife, Dorothy Stccle. As you probably know, Claude is an
enormously accomplished social psychologist best known for his work on
stereotype threat as an explanation for underperformance by various groups,
including women in math, Atican-American students on SATs, etc. Norton is
going to publish a terrific book of Claude's early next year describing the
evolution of his work on stereotype threat and how correcting for it can
improve performance of students dramatically.
Anyway, Claude has now left Stanford and come to Columbia, where he has been
Provost since September. In addition to being an excellent scholar, he is a
warm, charming man. His own background (he is
African-American) is relevant to his work on stereotype threat
Claude's wife, Dorothy, is also a highly regarded professional who held
important positions in early childhood education when they were at Stanford
Hope you are well. Look forward to seeing you at next week's meeting of the
Research Alliance Board.
Rost,

To the members of the District 2 CEC,
css rn | Lam writing to ask you to reject the
S proposed re-zoning plan for the Upper East Side. Overerowding in the elementary
schools on Upper East Side is a serious problem, However, the proposed re-zoning is in
contradiction to Mayor Bloomberg's current education reform to create smaller not larger
schools.
I want the DOE to choose a plan to address overcrowding without sacrificing IPS
158. Therefore, I support the plan proposed by the Parent Leaders of the Lipper East Side
1
NYCDOE_00000022(PLUS) to use the vacated space to incubate a new, separate elementary school to address the
issue of overcrowding. This new elementary school would ultimately be housed in the
MEETH building when PS 59 moves out in 2012.
Research has shown why larger schools do not work. Pleas ask the DOE to continue their
Gadition of creating sung, moderately sized neighburhood elementary schools w eusure tat
all of our children get the education they deserve in an environment most conducive to
learning. In other words, reject the enrrent re-zoning proposal for the Upper Fast Side.
Sincerely,
NYCDOE_00000023
