(ARA) - Water and the summer monthstend to go hand-in-hand - water skiing orfishing at a lake, taking a dip in a swim-ming pool and watering home-grownplants with a garden hose are among theseason's most popular activities. Recentsummers have also been some of the drieston record, prompting grass fires, drastical-ly low lake levels and water utilities havingto implement water restrictions on their cus-tomers.The National Weather Service has pre-dicted that states from Georgia to Texas toCalifornia and even the Hawaiian islandswill see persisting and potentially intensify-ing drought conditions this summer. In addi-tion to local droughts, water scarcity is aglobal issue. According to the UnitedNations' Water for Life campaign, around1.2 billion people, or almost one-fifth ofthe world's population, live in parts of theworld where access to clean water sourcesis extremely difficult. Additionally, wateraround the world is unevenly distributed, taken for granted and wasted, polluted orunsustainably managed."Water scarcity and access to cleanwater are issues in the U.S. and around theworld, but the good news is that we can allmake a positive difference when it comesto saving water," says Caitlin Feehan, envi-ronmental engineer with MWH Global, awater-focused engineering consulting firm."While climate change, population growthand tendency to waste resources areimpacting the world's water, there aresmall steps each of us can take to conservewater every day."So how can you positively impactwater usage inside and outside yourhome? Here are five simple tips for the sum-mer months:* Start with smart landscaping deci-sions. Adjust your lawn mower to a highersetting - longer grass shades the root sys-tems and holds moisture in soil better thanshorter grass. Also, consider compostingkitchen scraps, lawn clippings and gardenwaste to retain more water, reduce erosionand even decrease weed growth.* Water your yard responsibly. Whensummer temperatures heat up, water yourlawn in the mornings to reduce water lossfrom evaporation. You can also set yoursprinklers to a lower pressure. Why?Higher pressure creates a fine mist that

evaporates faster or will blow away, thuswasting water.* Start your day by showering with alow-flow showerhead. Low-flow shower-heads limit the water flow to around threegallons per minute as compared to twicethat for a normal showerhead. Pick one upat a local home improvement or hardwarestore. If you're remodeling a bathroom, you can look at other water- and energy-saving gadgets like tank-less water heatersor low-volume flush toilets.* Reduce the amount of water that runsdown drains. It's estimated that 95 percentof water that flows through a home runsdown the drain, but simple steps like turn-ing off the running water while brushingteeth or washing hands until it's time torinse decreases water waste. Consider col-lecting some of this water when there maybe another use for it, such as watering aplant. Also, rather than running cold waterfrom the tap until it's cold enough toquench your summer thirst, refill and storea pitcher of water in the refrigerator.* Save water and energy in the laun-dry room. Reduce water waste by runninga washer only when it's full. Using coldwater also reduces the amount of energyused and conserves hot water for otherhousehold needs that require it. Need anew washer? According to ENERGY STAR,the average American family washesalmost 300 loads of laundry each year, but can significantly reduce energy andwater usage by purchasing ENERGY STAR-qualified products. For example, a full-sized ENERGY STAR qualified washer uses14 gallons of water per load, nearly 50percent less water than a standardmachine."Summer is the perfect time to evaluatehow we use water as part of our daily rou-tine," says Feehan. "Water is our planet'smost precious resource that we can all con-serve for future generations by takingsmart, simple steps today."For more information on water savingstips this summer and information on incen-tives or rebates in your area, check withyour local water utility.
