With popularity growing daily, bioidentical hormones arebeing used or the replacement o insulin, thyroid hormones, gonadal (sex) hormones and the trend continues to benatural. For insulin dependent diabetics, the last decade saw atransition away rom using porcine based insulin derivatives tothat o recombinant human orms. Some doctors also preer toprescribe a natural bio-identical thyroid replacement o both T3and T4 in the correct ratios, rather than the single synthetic-T4drugs oered, or thyroid disorders. Instead o synthetic blends, physicians are also prescribing natural compounded sex hormonessuch as estrogen, progesterone and testosterone whenthe need arises or Hormone Replacement Therapy (HRT).Bioidentical hormones are manuactured in the lab to havethe same molecular structure as those made by the human bodyand are thereore reerred to as natural. By contrast, synthetichormones are intentionally dierent due to the act that drugcompanies cannot patent a bioidentical structure, thereore synthetichormones are invented that can be patented. Even thoughbioidentical hormones have been around or years, many practitionersare still unamiliar with them. One o the major issuesremaining concerning bioidentical hormones is ecacy—reportedwell designed double blinded studies to prove eectivenessand the long-term study o potential side-eects. Whileeicacy is a priority, the smaller number o controlled scientiicstudies or natural hormone therapy is due in part to the lack o inancial support or underwriting o scientiic trials on allthings natural. With increased interest, that act is changing asmore studies are being published with growing acceptance o research outside the USA.What we replace in our bodies as the need arises should beo the same biochemical composition as what our own endocrineorgans produce. Cost is another actor to consider as manynatural and bioidentical therapies are much less expensive thanmore widely recognized synthetics. Side eects are anothermajor consideration as many women choose bioidenticals thatoer an almost exact replica o what the body once produced.Other important considerations include the biochemical components, dosage and timing (chronopharmacology). Appropriatetesting to determine each individual’s needs and current state o health is the irst step. Once a deiciency is detected, bioidenticalhormone replacement (bHRT) may be the best solution.
