THE DIFFERENCES BETWEEN FACT AND OPINIONSIN READING COMPREHENSION
The use of knowing fact and opinion is to know what the writer thinksand how the writer supports theirs thinks, between what is proven tobe true and what needs to be proven. It
s can be easier for you to knowthe fact and or the opinion from the passage then if you know how tofind the main idea. Another way for know whether something is fact or
opinion, you can use this question, “Can this statement can bedebated?” to know get opinion; and this question, “is this known for certain to be true” to know the fact.
But before we compare fact andopinion, better to us to know what is the fact and the opinion first.
A.

Facts in Reading Comprehension
A fact is a statement that can be proven true or false with someobjective standart. Facts are the things
known
for certain to havehappened, the things
known
for certain to be true, the things
known
for certain to exist. Connelly (1996), states that fact is a statementof actually or occurrence which is based on direct evidence, actualexperience, or observation. Since the statements based on personalobservation, fact can be tested for its accuracy.
B.

Opinions in Reading Comprehension
An opinion is a statements that a person believes to be true but itcannot be measured against an objective standard. Opinions are thethings
believed
to have happened, the things
believed
to be true,the things
believed
to exist. The opinions may be based on facts, but they are still what we think, not what we know. Conelly(1996), state that an opinion is a statement of belief or feelingwhich shows o
ne’s feelings about a subject
. Means, it expresses itsview point or perspective. Since such statements depend on thepersonal experience, history, culture, and training of the peoplewho hold them, they cannot be judged true or false, right or wrong.C.
