To determine the penetration value of the Bitumen.
Container(55mm dia,35mm depth or 70mm dia ,45 mm depth),Water Bath (maintained at 25+0.1ºc),Penetrometer,Needle,Transfer tray,Stop watch & Thermometer.
Various types and grades of bituminous materials are availabledepending on their origin and refining process. The penetration testdetermines the consistency of these materials for the purpose of grading them,by measuring the depth (in units of one-tenth of mm or one hundredth of cm)to which a standard needle will penetrate vertically under specified conditionsof standard load, duration and temperature . Thus the basic principle of penetration is measurement of the penetration of needle in bitumen samplemaintained at 25±2ºC during 5 seconds; the total wt of needle assembly being100gm.The softer the Bitumen greater will be the penetration. The test is commonly adopted test on Bitumen to grade the material interms of hardness. An 80/100 grade Bitumen indicates that the penetrationvalue lies between 80 to 100.It helps to access its suitability for use indifferent climatic conditions and construction. In warmer regions lower gradesare preferred. Higher grade is used as spraying Bitumen. ISI has classified asgiven Note: ‘A’ denotes bitumen from Assam petroleum‘B’ denotes bitumen from other petroleum. The value of penetration may be affected by pouring temperature, needle sizeand wt placed, duration of release etc
Firstly preparation of sample bitumen was done by heating and stirring thegiven bitumen at 75- 100ºc above the softening point and liquefied free frombubbles and water. It was then poured into mould at a depth of 15mm moreBitumenGrade A25A35 & S35A45 & S45A65 & S65A90 & S90A200 & S200PenetrationValue20-3030-4040-5060-7080-100175-225
