When Tony and Alejandro Armendariz signed up to attend Ted E. Bear Hollow’s KidsKamp this past Marchthey were just looking for something different to do. “My wife died three years ago from cancer. She hadbeen sick for a very long time. Since then we have been working hard to get our lives back to normal. It hasnot been easy but Ted E. Bear Hollow has been great for us,” says Tony.Alejandro, who was eight when his mother died, joined his dad at Ted E. Bear Hollow’s first KidsKamp inNorth Omaha. Tony was impressed with all of the different activities in which he and his son could partake.“KidsKamp was a blast. I think I was getting more excitedthan Alejandro,” he says with a smile in his voice. “Who knew you could make so many things from tape! I still have my bowtie and the flowers that Alejandro made.”At the program, families work with volunteers for theafternoon on a variety of projects to honor and rememberthose who have died. This season of KidsKamp broughtbrand new activities for families, including a keepsakeshadow box, as well as some old favorites, particularlycomfort pillows made out of clothing worn by the person whodied.Another exciting change to this spring’s KidsKamps is theaddition of two new locations for the program. In the past, day camps have been held at Ted E. Bear Hollow and inCouncil Bluffs. This year, though, Ted E. Bear Hollow hasexpanded and is now offering day camps in both NorthOmaha and South Omaha. The Armendariz family attendedthe first Ted E. Bear Hollow program held in North Omaha. Acamp is also currently scheduled for Saturday, June 30 at Spring Lake Elementary School in South Omaha.“Alejandro spent a lot of time working on his shadow box. I would offer up suggestions but he would say,‘Dad, I want to do this on my own,’” remembers Tony. “The shadow box and the pillow turned out great, andwe are so happy that we came to the KidsKamp. Alejandro is growing up so fast and taking on newresponsibilities every day. The memories and crafts that we created at KidsKamp will always be with us.”

From the Executive Director
Dear Friends,The staff at Ted E. Bear Hollow hear life stories on a daily basis -stories that break our hearts and stories that lift our spirits. Familiesshare with us how they are healing and rediscovering life as a result of the support of Ted E. Bear Hollow. In an effort to share this narrativewith the public, we have developed a program that we call “Hope atthe Hollow Hour.”This program allows us to present our mission, our methods, and ourpassion in a concise form (under 60 minutes) that informs andinspires. Responses have been more than encouraging. A boardmember told me that, even though she knows our mission and storieswell, she still experienced deeper appreciation for the work of Ted E. Bear Hollow. Some new friends have said, “What can I do tohelp?”Ted E. Bear Hollow does not have, and probably will never have, abig advertising budget. Yet, we need to reach so many more peoplewhose children are grieving and struggling. We do not want to “keepour light under a bushel basket.” Word of mouth is a primary way tolet people know what we have to offer children and their families. If you are interested in knowing us better, join us for Hope at theHollow Hour. Bring a friend and help us spread the word. Kids neednot grieve alone.Sincerely,
Monthly E-Newsletters more than just information
One way that Ted E. Bear Hollow keeps you up-to-date on important news and changes within theorganization is by mailing bi-annual newsletters.Traditionally, the newsletters have been printed in color and mailed. This method is very costly(over $6,500 annually!). In order to give you more timely information, and in order to direct morefunds to kids grief support programs, we have decided that a smaller, more frequent, electronic newsletterwould be more appropriate. Each newsletter will not only be emailed, but will also be posted on ourwebsite where you can view it, share it, email it, download it or print it.We need your help to implement this plan. Please send your name and the email address you want us touse totedebearhollownewsletter@gmail.com. We do understand that some of you will need to continuereceiving a hard copy, bi-annual newsletter so we will continue to offer that to you. If it fits into your life toreceive a monthly e-newsletter, we very much appreciate your willingness to make this change with us.
