5 Questions To Ask Before Starting A Strategic Plan
Whether you are a solo entrepreneur or working with a team, it pays to be ready and prepare for success before youstart your strategic planning. This is just like doing warm-ups before you start 'working out' or lifting weights. If you walk into your gym off thestreet and just start pumping, you could tear a muscle. While you won't tear muscles in strategic planning, you certainly can get hurt. You could lose cash, lose direction andlose momentum. Don't take this unnecessary risk. Instead, warm up for success by asking and answering these fivequestions. So, pull up a chair and let's have a little one-on-one time. I don't want you to tell me your answers. And at this point, you don't need to tell anyone else either. This is all about you.So much of the time when people hear the words 'strategic plan' they start groaning. Oh no. Not that! Memories of dusting off last year's plan rise up out of the murky swamps from years of corporate work gone by.Or it could be that although you're not new to business… in your own business you've managed to sidestep the stra-tegic planning process. And when it comes right down to it you'd confess as one well known author just did," I justnever actually DID one!"It's OK. I won't tell anyone. Plus you don't have to do a strategic plan right now.At least not yet.
Before you ever start making a strategic plan, ask yourself these 5 questions. You can just jot down your answers orwrite them now in a document in your laptop. In just 15-20 minutes, you'll have laid the inner groundwork for yoursolid foundation.Once you have your answers, you'll be set to go--using a Strategic Storyboard or planning systems that work best foryou. You're at a very exciting moment. And I can feel how you can't wait to get going on your dynamite plans.Your strategic plan could be a strategy about many different things--a business you want to start, a growth opportu-nity, a community or non-profit plan, a product, a project, or a marketing effort--so please adjust the questions tomatch your specific situation.
1. What makes your business absolutely unique?
I bet you've heard of USP. It stands for Unique Selling Proposition. Well, being unique is not just about your businessin general--it's also about every aspect of your project, product, or marketing effort. What is it that really distinguishes you and makes you stand out above your competition? What is it that your business does best? That makes you uniquely positioned to offer what you want to deliver? If you are looking at a service, a product or a project--what is it that you are going to offer that is absolutely unique?Sure, there may be other people doing something similar. In fact, I hope there are--because that means there's aproven market for your idea.(Competition is a good thing! It's proof that lots of people want what you have to offer.)But what will you do, offer or provide to distinguish your business?
