the maverick messiah INCREDULOUS
“… though he was in
the form of God, (He) did not count equality with God a thing to be grasped,
but emptied himself, by taking the form of a servant,
being born in the likeness of men.
And being found inhuman form, he humbled himself by becoming obedient to the point of death, even death on across.
Therefore God has highly exalted him and bestowed on him the name that is above every name,
so that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, in heaven and on earth and under theearth,
and every tongue confess that Jesus Christ is
Lord, to the glory of God the Father.”
Phil. 2:5-11These are among the oldest words in the New Testament, composed within twenty years of the deathof Jesus. They embody a staggering claim. Think of what they are saying. First, that Jesus shared thevery nature of God Almighty. He was the only One in all history who actually chose to be born in thisworld. He humbled Himself by becoming one of us. The indescribably Mighty Lord shrinks Himself to
become a fertilized egg in a girl’s womb. That, and no less, is the Christian claim. You must evaluate it
carefully to see if you find it credible, but make no mistake: that, and nothing less, is the claim. Jesus isno witty rabbi, no wandering prophet, but God Almighty voluntarily limiting Himself to share our hu-manity in order, among other things, to show human beings what He is like and how much He lovesthem.

He says He is coming to judge the world at the end of time. Now let us get this clear. Among Pantheists, like the Indians, anyone might say that he was a part of God, or one with God: there would be nothing very odd about it. But this man, since He was a Jew,could not mean that kind of God. God, in their language, meant the Being outside of the world, whohad made it and was infinitely different from anything else. And when you have grasped that, you will see that what this man said was, quite simply, the most shocking thing that has ever been uttered by
