Summer break . . . and the livin' ain't easy!

Just because the students at New York College have flown the coop doesn't mean assistant residence hall director Heather Wells can relax. Fischer Hall is busier than ever, filled with squealing thirteen- and fourteen-year-old girls attending the first ever Tania Trace Teen Rock Camp, hosted by pop sensation Tania Trace herself—who just happens to be newly married to Heather's ex-boyfriend, heartthrob Jordan Cartwright. But the real headache begins when the producer of a reality TV show starring Tania winds up dead . . . and it's clear that the star was the intended victim.

Grant Cartwright, head of Cartwright Records, wants to keep his daughter-in-law (and his highest-earning performer) alive. So he hires his oldest son, black sheep of the family and private investigator Cooper Cartwright—who just happens to be Heather's new fiancé. Heather should leave the detecting to Cooper. But with a dorm full of hysterical mini-divas-in-training, she can't help but get involved. And after Tania shares a really shocking secret with her, this reality suddenly becomes more dangerously real than anyone ever anticipated.

Racing up the stairs to the second oor, my heart pounding—I’m a walker, not a runner. I try not to race anywhere unlessit’s an emergency, and according to the call I received, that’swhat this is—I fnd the corridor dark and deserted. I can’t see anything except the bloodred glow o the
exit
sign at theend o the hall. I can’t hear anything but the sound o myown heavy breathing.

They’re here, though. I can eel it in my bones. Onlywhere? Then it hits me. O course. They’re behind me.“Give it up,” I yell, kicking open the doors to the student library. “You’re so bustedThe bullet hits me square in the back. Pain radiates upand down my spine.“Ha!” shouts a masked man, springing out rom an alcove.“I got you! You’re dead. So dead!Movie directors oten cue their heroine’s death with ash-backs o the most signifcant moments rom her lie, birth tothe present. (Let’s be honest, though: who remembers herown birth?)This isn’t what happens to me. As I stand there dying, allI can think about is Lucy, my dog. Who’s going to take careo her when I’m gone?Cooper. O course, Cooper, my landlord and new fancé.Except that our engagement isn’t so new anymore. It’s beenthree months since he proposed—not that we’ve told anyoneabout our plans to get married, because Cooper wants toelope in order to avoid his unbearable amily—and Lucy’sgrown so accustomed to fnding him in my bed that she goesstraight to
him
or her breakast and morning walk, since he’ssuch an early riser, and I’m . . . not.Actually, Lucy goes straight to Cooper or everythingnow because Cooper oten works rom home and spends allday with her while I’m here at Fischer Hall. To tell the truth,Lucy seems to like Cooper better than she likes me. Lucy’sa little bit o a traitor.Lucy’s going to be so well taken care o ater I’m dead
