NASA SP-2008-565 Columbia Crew Survival Investigation Report 298870
Wow.
Probably the most GRIPPING NASA report ever published, reading about and SEEING DETAILED PHOTOS OF what was left of those melted SpaceSuits DESTROYED my inner-secret fantasy of somehow surviving / skydiving out of such an event.
i NOW understand that ridiculous survival notion to be the rough equivalent of being BLASTED with a zillion blowtorches WHILE sitting inside a tree-shredder simultaneously riding the most BEYOND-extreme rollercoaster AS it derails in mid-gyration at KILLER altitude during explosive decompression.
It seems that as flight control was lost during re-entry, in MERE SECONDS: stressed metal twisted, the crew cabin separated & depressurized, consciousness faded, hull integrity disintegrated, exposed objects liquified via intense vector-heat & these astronauts QUICKLY ceased existing in physical form probably WITHOUT having time to process thier demise.
Perhaps thankfully, the ONLY thing this report DIDNT show was bits of charred human remains? [...wouldnt be suprised if there WAS NOT much LEFT.] & yes, i DO apologize for how insensitive it might sound/be to talk about this in such morbid terms.
