Base Plate Modeling inSTAAD.Pro 2007
:Base plates are normally designed using code-base procedures (e.g. AISC-ASD). Engineersoften run into situations where there are no codesavailable to design a particular type of a baseplate or there are instances where base plate weresimply over designed in the past and the engineerhas to check the design of this old base platebased upon new loadings and makemodifications as required. In these situations, an engineer may opt to do afinite element analysis on the base plate.STAAD.Pro 2007 is equipped with a lot of meshgeneration and loading tools. The purpose othis document is to demonstrate how engineerscan analyze base plates using STAAD.Pro 2007.
We would like to thank Mr. Indranil RoyChowdhury, P.Eng. from Hartford  Installations, Missisauga, Ontario for allowingus to publish this document.
Please note that this document assumes that theuser has basic knowledge of STAAD.Pro andFinite Element Analysis.
Exercise Problem
:We would like to create the following base plategeometry in STAAD.Pro. This base plate wasused to support a tank leg. The tank leg pipediameter is 0.9ft and the thickness of the pipe is0.5 in thick.

Open a new STAAD.Pro file using the spaceoption and the units of ft and kip.
Figure 4: File creation dialog box
Give an appropriate file name.3.
Click on the
button and then click onthe
button on the following screen.
The STAAD.Pro interface will appear asshown in Figure 5.
Figure 5: STAAD.Pro user interface
Create a new grid. Click on the
button in the data area. The
inputbox will appear as shown in Figure 6.
Figure 6: Linear grid box
Input the parameters as shown in Figure 6.6.
Click on the
button. You will notice the
Entry in the
 Data Area
Figure 7: The Base_Plate grid is shown in the GraphicsWindow.
Draw the outline of the base plate usingbeam elements. Press the
Snap Node/Beam
 button in the
Data Area

Now we have to create the pipe section/baseplate and the stiffener/base plate interface.9.
Click on the
button in the
 Data Area
Select the
grid option and enter theinput parameters as shown in Figure 9.

Click the
Turn on the
grid and the radialgrid will appear in the STAAD.Pro graphicswindow as illustrated in Figure 10.
