He was promoted to Lieutenant on July 16, and in October he was appointed First Lieutenant (second in command) of destroyer HMS WALLACE at the unusually early age of 21. He was promoted to Commander, but his naval career came to an end on the death of his father-in-law, King George VI. He continued to train with the air force.

Between 1953 and 1954, he and the Queen travelled 43,618 miles visiting countries in North America, the Caribbean, Australasia, Ceylon and Africa, as part of the Coronation tour.

He launched a pilot award program for boys. This program would later become known as the Duke of Edinburgh's Award

In May, Prince Philip became the rst member of the royal family to be interviewed on television.

In August, he gave up ying after accumulating 5,986 hours as a pilot in 59 types of aircraft in 44 years. June 4: Prince Philip is hospitalized with a bladder infection, forcing him to miss some Diamond Jubilee events.
