When Iwas asked to put together this satellite session I was given guidance tomake it as “skill-focused” as possible. And to be honest, I struggled a bit withfiguring out what we might to be able to accomplish: obviously, I can turn you all intotechnologists in 90 minutes, and there are simply too many existing mHealth toolsand too little time to give you any meaningful experience with even a subset ofthem. But I think what we can do with our time this evening is begin to develop your abilityto think like an mHealth solution designer. And in some ways, this will actually bemore useful for you because design is where it all begins, and it’s the part of themHealth development process where the most important decisions are made. Andwho better to be leading that decision making than you, the health experts!1

So, here is what we’re going to do:First, we’ll standardize our understanding ofmHealthThen I’ll identify some basic considerations and frameworks designing mHealthsolutionsAnd you’ll get some practice coming up with mHealth ideas and get feedback onthem—as we know, practice and feedback are critical for effective learningFinally, we’ll hear about a local mHealth project—MAMA Bangladesh—and learnwhat it took to actually turn the idea into a reality2

But before we begin, I would like to conduct a quick, informalsurvey of sorts onmobile phone ownership and use.Pleasestand if you own a mobile phone.OK. Remain standing if you use your phone to:Make/receive voice calls.Send/receive text messages.Send/receive email.Browse the Web.3. If you’re still standing, what else do you do with your phone?Thank you for indulging me.I have been conducting this informal survey for the lastcouple of years, across several countries, with different groups of people, and theresults are always interesting and illuminating. The numbers of people that remainstanding increases every time. And as you all know, the results would have beenvery different even just a few years ago, let alone a decade ago.3
