Parks & Game Reserves

Maasai Mara National Reserve
Altitude 5000 Ft Area: 1,510 Sq. Kms. Distance from Nairobi: 275 Kms. The Maasai Mara Game Reserve is often called simply The Mara which is the Maa word meaning Mottled, a reference to the patchy landscape. Both spellings Maasai and Maasai are acceptable although the latter is more usual when referring to the people. The Maasai are a proud semi-nomadic cattle-rearing people with a fascinating culture and are divided into a number of sub-tribes, some of which share the Mara region. Much of the wildlife can be divided into mammals, birds and reptiles. Many of the mammals can be divided into carnivores, primates and ungulates (hooved animals). Carnivores include the cheetah, genet, hyena, jackal, leopard, lion, mongoose, serval and wild dog. Primates include the baboon, bush baby and monkey. Odd-toed ungulates include the rhino and zebra. Even-toed ungulates include the buffalo, giraffe, hippo, warthog and antelope (bushbuck, Dik-dik, duiker, eland, gazelle, hartebeest, impala, klipspringer, kudu, oribi, reedbuck, roan antelope, topi, waterbuck and wildebeest). The famoua Big Five are the Buffalo, Elephant, Leopard, Lion and Rhinoceros. The Big Nine extends this to include Cheetah, Zebra, Giraffe and Hippo. An impressive feature is the annual migration of wildebeests, zebras and gazelles from the plains of the Serengeti that cross the Tanzanian border and rivers to reach the Maras grasslands from late June, tracked by predators: lion, leopard, cheetah, and hyena, and circled by vultures as their journey unfolds. Their dramatic river crossings are a reality for tourists visiting in early July-September. ACCOMMODATION: Fairmont Mara Safari Club, Mara Serena lodge, Sarova Mara camp, Governors camp, Keekorok lodge, Mara Intrepids, Mara Simba lodge plus much more.

Lake Bogoria National Park

Altitude 3200 Ft Area: 107 Sq Kms. Distance from Nairobi: 260 Kms Some 30 km (20 miles) south of Lake Baringo, as the ruddy ducks flies, is Lake Bogoria National Park. This small equatorial lake has geysers and hot springs. Theyre relatively few vantage points from which you can see it but its topaz and green waters are strikingly beautiful. The Maasai know Lake Bogoria as Mbatibat. Along Lake Bogorias western shore is a bed of hot springs and blowholes, which infrequently erupt two and a half to three meters (8 to 10 ft) into the air, and constantly emit a pungent sulfur smell. These geothermal phenomena are intriguing but also dangerously hot. ACCOMMODATION: Island Camp
Did you know? No two zebras ha ve the same patter n.

Lake Nakuru National Park

Altitude 4000 - 5770 Ft Area: 188 Sq Kms. Distance from Nairobi: 160 Kms. Lake Nakuru is a very shallow, strongly alkaline lake 62 square km in extent. It is set in a picturesque landscape of surrounding woodland and grassland. The landscape includes areas of marsh and grasslands alternating with rocky cliffs and outcrops, stretches of acacia woodland and rocky hillsides covered with a Euphorbia forest on the eastern perimeter. Lake Nakuru itself boasts the most spectacular of all of Africas bird sights. Enormous flocks of pastel pink flamingoes, as well as other bird species. Here you have wonderful opportunities for color photography as masses of pink bodies glide above the reflection of blue water. Many species including reedbuck, bushbuck, wart hog, baboon, leopard and the Rothschild giraffe call this home. It has also been designated a rhino sanctuary. ACCOMMODATION: Lion Hill Lodge, Lake Nakuru Lodge, Flamingo hill Camp, Mbweha Camp plus much more.

The park includes a variety of habitats ranging from higher forest, bamboo, alpine moorlands, glaciers, tarns and glacial moraines. The park, which is also an International Biosphere Reserve, covers 715 sq/km, includes the Mountain and consists of all the ground above 3200m with two small salients extending lower down to 2450m along the Sirimon and Naro Moru tracks. Surrounding the park is Mount Kenya Forest Reserve with an area of approximately 2095 sq/km. MAJOR ATTRACTIONS Mountain climbing, hiking, Pristine wilderness, lakes, tarns, glaciers and peaks of great beauty, geological variety, forest, mineral springs, rare and endangered species of animals, High altitude adapted plains game, Unique mountain and alpine vegetation with 11 species of endemic plants. ACTIVITIES Mountain climbing, game viewing. WILDLIFE Reptiles: Alpine Meadow Lizard; Green Mamba; lizards and skinks; Montane Viper. ACCOMMODATION: Mountain Lodge, Fairmont Mt. Kenya Safari Club, Ol Pejeta Ranch & Sweetwaters Tented Camp plus much more.

Mount Kenya National Park

Altitude 2500 - 4000 Ft Area: 715 Sq Kms. Distance from Nairobi: 280 Kms. Mt. Kenya is an imposing extinct volcano dominating the landscape of the Kenyan Highlands, East of the Rift. Mt. Kenya lies about 140 km North, North-East of Nairobi with its Northern flanks across the Equator. The mountain has two main peaks: Batian (5200m) and Nelion (5188m). The mountains slopes are cloaked in forest, bamboo, scrub and moorland giving way on the high central peaks to rock, ice and snow. Mt. Kenya is an important water catchment area, supplying the Tana and Northern Ewaso Ngiro systems.

Samburu National Reserve

Altitude 4000 - 5770 Ft Area: 188 Sq Kms. Distance from Nairobi: 160 Kms. Samburu is a journey of about 220 miles north of Nairobi in Kenyas arid, northern scrub lands. This tiny park is only 64 square miles but in its boundaries is the best game viewing the North Country has to offer. A Samburu native is fond of saying the animals in the north are more beautiful and while theres certainly some regional pride in this statement, theres also quite a lot of truth. You will see species here you wont see anywhere else and yes, they are uniformly beautiful. Reticulated giraffe, boldly marked blocks separated by the finest of lines, delicately browse through acacia branches. Grevys zebra, fine lined patterns that seem to merge to gray from a distance, is easily distinguished from its Burchell (common) zebra cousin besides the finer patterning the Grevy is larger with more of a domesticated horse conformation; front and back ends seem more in balance. Grevys also seem to have a bit more self possession, less of the Burchells spookiness, and maybe that comes from the higher self esteem good looks bring about. Samburu National Reserve can be entered via the Ngare Mare and Buffalo Springs gates. Once inside the reserve, there are two mountains visible: Koitogor and Ololokwe. Samburu National Reserve is very peaceful and attracts animals because of the Uaso Nyiro river (meaning brown water and pronounced U-aa-so-Nyee-ro) that runs through it and the mixture of acacia, riverine forest, thorn trees and grassland vegetation. The Uaso Nyiro flows from the Kenyan highlands and empties into the famous Lorian Swamp. The natural serenity that is evident here is due to its distance from industry and the inaccessibility of the reserve for many years. One of our favorite animals is the gerenuk, the gracefully long- necked giraffe antelope, whos perfectly capable of stretching full height on his hind legs to snatch an acacia morsel.

That strikingly marked huge antelope, Beisa oryx and elephant, lives here as well. ACCOMMODATION: Samburu Serena Lodge, Samburu Simba Lodge, Samburu Sopa Lodge, Samburu Game Lodge, Samburu Intrepids, Elephant Bedroom Camp, Samburu Larsens camp plus much more.

duces mirages. Swamps and springs, fed by underground rivers from Kilimanjaros melting snows, form permanent watering places for wildlife through- out times of drought. The lake bed is subject to sporadic floods and noxious salts in the gravel bed are dissolved to serve as a deadly poison for what is left of the local woods; very few of the fine acacias, once a feature of this region remain. The snows of Kilimanjaro, white and crystalline, form a majestic backdrop to one of Kenyas most spectacular displays of wildlife - lion, elephant, leopard, rhino, cheetah, buffalo and hosts of plains game, creating Kenyas most sought after photographers paradise. But the Parks popularity is also causing serious concern. The combination of wildlife, tourist vehicles and Masaai cattle are destroying the delicate but precious grassland. Park rules now insist that vehicles stick to roads and tracks. The Parks best game runs are around swamps and there is a fine lookout on Observation Hill which offers views over the whole of the Park and beyond. ACCOMMODATION: Amboseli Serena, Amboseli Sopa, Oltukai Lodge, Porini Camp, Tortilis camp plus much more.

The unusual vegetation, rugged terrain, streams and waterfalls combine to create an area of great scenic beauty in the National Park. The park is surrounded by a predominantly indigenous forest, whose management is under an MoU between KWS and the Forest Department ACCOMMODATION: The Ark Lodge, Aberdare Country Club, Tree-tops Lodge plus much more.

Lake Baringo National Park

Altitude 3180 Ft Area: 130 Sq Kms. Distance from Nairobi: 315 Kms. Lake Baringo is good stopover site to break a long safari across the Rift Valley. Lake Baringo National Park has now become Kenyans popular weekend destination. The brown slightly saline lake is a home for hippos, crocodiles, and over 400 species of birds. Lake Baringo has an average depth of only 8 meters (25 ft), and its three islands (Ol Kokwa, Teddy Bear, and Gibraltar) are breeding grounds for the statuesque, and one and a half meter (5 ft) Goliath heron, the largest of the heron species. The shores are a mixture of sand marsh, which provide some cover and shade for the resident hippos. ACCOMMODATION: Lake Baringo Country Club & Island Camp

Amboseli National Park

Altitude 3900 - 4500 Ft Area: 392 Sq Kms. Distance from Nairobi: 265 Kms. At the foot of Africas highest mountain, 5895m Kilimanjaro, is one of Kenyas most popular parks. The snow capped peak of Mount Kilimanjaro rising above a saucer of clouds dominates every aspect of Amboseli. Gazetted as a national park in 1974 it covers only 392 sq kms but despite its small size and its fragile ecosystem it supports a wide range of mammals (well over 50 of the larger species) and birds (over 400 species). Years ago, Amboseli was the locale around which such famous writers as Ernest Hemingway and Robert Ruark spun their stories of big game hunting in the wilds of Africa. It is also the home of the Maasai people, those tall, proud nomads whose legendary prowess in battle and single handed acts of bravery in fights with wild animals has spread across the globe. The Maasai have learned to live in complete harmony with their environment and the wildlife which surrounds them. A part of Amboseli National Park is composed of a dried-up lake bed which in the shimmering heat pro-

Aberdare National Park

Altitude 2500 - 4000 Ft Area: 715 Sq Kms. Distance from Nairobi: 280 Kms. The Aberdares are an isolated volcanic range that forms the eastern wall of the rift valley, running roughly 100km north south between Nairobi and Thomsons Falls. Soils are red and of volcanic origin, but rich in organic matter. There are two main peaks, Ol Donyo Lesatima (3,999m) and Kinangop (3,906m) sepa- rated by a long saddle of alpine moorland at over 3,000m. The topography is diverse with deep ravines that cut through the forested eastern and western slopes and there are many clear streams and waterfalls. The Aberdares are an important water catchment area providing water to the Tana and Athi rivers and part of Central Rift and Northern drainage basins.

Tsavo West National Park

Altitude 500 - 600 Ft Area: 9065 Sq Kms. Distance from Nairobi: 232 Kms. Tsavo West National Park covers 9000 km2, approximately 30% of Kenyas area under parks, and contains a diversity of habitats, wildlife and a mountainous scenic landscape. The park is a vast expanse of savanna stretching from the Athi river, North of the Mombasa-Nairobi road and south to the Tanzanian border. The North-Eastern boundary along the Athi adjoins Tsavo East National Park, but Tsavo West has a more varied topography and a more diverse array of habitats than its neighbour. The parks habitats include open plains alternating with Savannah bush and semi desert scrub, acacia woodlands, rocky ridges and outcrops and more extensive ranges and isolated hills, belts of riverine vegetation, palm thickets and on the Chyulu hills, mountain forest. There are numerous rocky outcrops and ridges and part of the park towards the Chyulu Hills is of recent volcanic origin with lava flows and ash cones including the Shet- ani lava flow, an example of a recent volacano. In the far south-western corner on the Kenya Tanzania border is Lake Jipe, part of which is in the park. This very attractive lake is fed by runoff from Mt. Kilimanjaro and the North Pare mountains. At Mzima Springs, in the North of the park, water that has filtered underground from the Chyulu Hills gushes from below a lava ridge into a series of clear pools. ACCOMMODATION: Kilaguni Serena Lodge, Ngulia Safari Lodge, Kitani Severin Safari Camp/ Lodge, Finch Hattons Tented Lodge, Voyager Safari Camp plus much more.

Lake Naivasha is one of Kenyas most beautiful small Rift Valley Lakes. It is surrounded by feathery papyrus, marshy lagoons and grassy shores where distorted flocks of graceful flamingoes and pink backed pelican settle on the water. From Lake Naivasha, one can take a boat to the Crescent Island, a private game sanctuary where you can walk around the island and view at close range, zebra, waterbuck, giraffe and several species of antelope. Hippos are seen and heard during boat ride. Bird life around the lake is also abundant. Optional activities include a visit to the Hells gate National park ACCOMMODATION: Lake Naivasha Sopa Lodge, Lake Naivasha Simba Lodge, Chui Lodge, Rift Valley Golf & Country club plus much more.

Nairobi National Park

Altitude 5000 Ft Area: 117 Sq Kms. Distance from Nairobi: 7 Kms. The 117 km2 Nairobi National Park is unique by being the only protected area in the world with a variety of animals and birds close to a capital city. As expected, the park is a principal attraction for visitors to Nairobi. The park also serves many residents and citizens living in the city The park has a diversity of environments with characteristic fauna and flora. Open grass plains with scattered acacia bush are predominant. The western side has a highland dry forest and a permanent river with a riverine forest in the south. In addi- tion, there are stretches of broken bush country and deep, rocky valleys and gorges with scrub and long grass. Man-made dams have also added a further habitat, favourable to certain species of birds and other aquatic biota(life forms). The dams also attract water dependent herbivores during the dry season. The park has a rich, diverse birdlife with 400 species recorded. However, all species are not always present as some are seasonal. Northern migrants pass through the park primarily during late March through April. Nairobi National Park is one of the most successful of Kenyas rhino sanctuaries; it is already generating a stock for reintroduction in the species former range and other upcoming sanctuaries. Due to this success, it is one of the few parks where a visitor can be certain of seeing a black rhino in its natural habitat. To the south of the park is the Athi-Kapiti Plains and Kitengela Migration and dispersal area. These are vital areas for herbivores dispersal during the rains and concentrate in the park in the dry season. Meru is part of a complex of protected areas along the Tana river that includes the adjacent Bisanadi and Mwingi National Reserves (to the east and south respectively), Kora National Park and Rahole National Reserve. The wetter northwestern sector is hilly with rich volcanic soils. The land flattens towards the East, where grey alluvial volcanic soils appear. The area is crossed by numerous permanent streams, draining from the Nyambenes and flowing in parallel between tounges of lava, south-east towards the Tana River. As well as the many streams that cross it, the park is bounded by three large rivers: the Tana to the South, the Ura to the South West and the Rojeweru to the East. Uganda - Overview
It is reputed as Africas friendliest country! The moment you land at Entebbes modern and efficient international airport, with its breathtaking equatorial location on the forested shore of island-strewn Lake Victoria, it is clear that Uganda is no ordinary safari destination. Then, just 40km away, sprawled across seven hills, there is the capital Kampala. Uganda is the only safari destination whose range of forest primates is as impressive as its selection of plains antelope. And this verdant biodiversity is further attested to by Ugandas status as by far the smallest of the four African countries whose bird checklist tops the 1,000 mark! Yet there is more to the country than wildlife - far more! There is the mighty Nile, punctuated by the spectacular Murchison Falls, and the setting for some of the worlds

most thrilling commercial white-water rafting. There are the snow-capped peaks of the Rwenzori, which provide a tantalizing challenge to dedicated mountaineers, as well as the Virunga Volcanoes and Mount Elgon, both of which offer highly rewarding hiking opportunities through scintillating highland scenery. Mountain Gorillas are one of the most fascinating species of animal to many people. With their soulful eyes, obvious intelligence, and expressive nature; they tap a very fundamental sense of empathy. The Bwindi Impenetrable National Park is one of a small handful of places left on Earth where gorillas can be seen in their natural habitat. The beauty of the tropical rain forest is spectacular. The thrill of spending time looking in the deep blue eyes of these gentle and endangered giants is an awesome adventure, exciting experience and unforgettable through your lifetime!

Safari Travel Tips

Best time to travel
Many travelers ask when the best time to travel is; but this is not easily answered because different reserves have different peak seasons for game viewing, even within the same country, because climate and game viewing conditions vary from year to year. With that in mind, wed say generally speaking, the dry months of July through October and mid-December through February are the best game viewing times in East Africa (Kenya, Tanzania and Uganda), when shorter grasses make animals easier to find. An exception to this would be the Serengeti, where the migration of wildebeest and zebra occurs from November through June, centered around different sections of the reserve as the animals make their way north to Kenyas Maasai Mara, where the migration generally peaks from July through August. Heavy annual rains fall from late-March through May in East Africa and are good for observing calving, and for fresh green appearance and dust-free conditions. Just after the rains, June and early December are beautifully green and dust free.

Travel and change of place impart new vigor to the mind. Seneca

Insurance

lodges and camps are likely to rely on radio for communication. Most game parks are now within cell phone range & you can purchase local Sim cards at reasonable costs.

Food & drinks

It is generally recommended to drink only bottled mineral water which is readily available everywhere. There are no restrictions on the sale or consumption of alcoholic drinks in Kenya. A good selection of local beers and soft drinks are available everywhere, and you will find a range of imported wines, beers and spirits in many places, although these can be expensive. The quality and value of food in Kenya is generally very good. We can cater for special meals on request.

Health
Inoculation against Yellow Fever and Cholera is advisable, but not mandatory. According to Health Authority, Yellow Fever vaccination is required upon return. It is imperative that anti - malarial prophylactics be taken before, during and after your visit. Changes of diet and water often cause mild stomach upsets, so a supply of anti- diarrhea pills is advisable. Do not drink tap water, but it is safe to use the water supplied in flasks in your hotel room and bottled mineral water is readily available. It is recommended to enroll with the Flying Doctors Society through us so that in the unlikely event that a medical emergency occurs whilst on safari, you will be flown to the nearest medical center.

You should take most of your money in travellers cheques from a well known company such as American Express or Thomas Cook. US Dollars or Pounds Sterling are recommended. Spears and shields are thrust at every tourist. Local handicrafts and bead work screen printed fabrics are common.

Language
The official language of Kenya is Kiswahili. This is spoken and understood by the great majority of the population, many of whom also speak a tribal language.
