Audience and Use Profile
The following procedure may be particularly useful for college students studying design andimaging, color reproduction, or print media, as well as other design software users who need toprint quality images with proper color management. While reading this procedure, it is helpful
though not necessary
to understand what a color space and color profile are.Use this procedure to achieve accurate color in your prints, understand how color profiles areused, and learn how to print files to get accurate color from a printer.
The following procedure outlines the process of printing using color profiles in Adobe PhotoshopCS. It explains how to print with accurate color to an Epson Stylus Pro 7600, Stylus Photo 1280,or any similar printer using Adobe Photoshop CS.
If you don’t use Photoshop, the same principles apply, assuming your program allows you to
manage color properly. The step-by-step instructions include making a duplicate, page setup, image size and resolution, simple sharpening, print with preview dialog and its color managementoptions, and print dialog and setting the printer settings. These steps are to be used once you havesaved your retouched image and are ready to print. Screenshots are provided for clarification.
The example screenshots are all from Mac OS X, but Photoshop dialogs and concepts onother platforms are similar. The concepts are the same in other design programs as well.
Make a duplicate
Duplicate the original image by selecting (Image => Duplicate). Be sure that DuplicateMerged Layers Only is checked. Select OK.
Don’t flatten the original. Be sure to close the original window after making the duplicate
to free up computer RAM and prevent accidental overwriting of the original file.
 Page Setup
Decide what size you will print the image.2.
Choose (File => Page Setup). The Page Setup dialog box will appear.3.
Select the correct printer in the Format For selection.4.
Choose Custom Paper Size under Settings. The Page Setup dialog will change to show theCustom Paper Size choices.
Select your paper size then choose OK.
Image Size
Calculate the Image Size and enter it in Document Size.2.
Ensure your image is a resolution that will produce the desired width. Change if necessary.NOTE: Unless you are using advanced resampling techniques or special software, it is fine to letthe printer driver resample the image as necessary, so leave Resample Image unselected.3.
Decide if you want white space around the image.
Change the canvas width and height for desired white space.
Set Anchor to your desired orientation then select OK.
