TheSolidWasteManagementPlan(SWMP),passedin2006,iscriticaltocreatingafair andenvironmentallyresponsiblesystemforhandlingwasteinNewYorkCity.Most notably,theplancallsforeliminating6millionmilesoftrucktrafficeachyear,and providingrelieftothosecommunitiesthatcurrentlyhandlethegreatmajorityofthe cityswaste.Presently,70%ofwastehandledinNewYorkCitygoestofourcommunity districtsintheSouthBronx,WilliamsburgGreenpoint,andSoutheastQueens.Nearly thirtypercentofallsolidwastehandledinNewYorkCityishandledintheSouthBronx, whichishosttoadisproportionateamountoftruckintensive,landbasedwaste transferstationsandotherpollutingfacilitiesinthecity.Manhattancurrentlyhasno wastetransferstations.
