As relative newcomer to the
world of history competition,
Dominic Pino learned fast.Pino, a seventh grade student
at Templeton Middle School, fin-ished second in the National
History Bee. While the event was
held May 12, it was broadcast ont
he History Channel June 1. As part
of the agreement for participating,Pino had to agree to not state there
sults prior to the television broad-cast.During the June 5 Hamilton
School Board meeting, PrincipalPatty Polczynski explained thatinformation about the contest was
sent to the school last fall. She
talked with teachers RhondaWatton and Alan Schneider, andthey expressed an interest in partic-
ipating in the event.
Pino was school champion inthe first history bee at Templeton,
advancing to the state competitionin Marshall in March. Pino won the
state competition —which includedfi
ve
other competitors — to qualifyfor the national competition inW
ashington D.C.
Polczynski said that while thefamily couldn’t release the exactresults, they were able to say Pinowas
in the top 16.As Pino advanced in competi-
tion, he said he stayed in schoolduring lunch two to three times aweek to study for the competition
with assistance from Schneider. In
addition, Pino’s younger sisterearned the “master quizzer” titleby helping Dominic prepare the
competition.
