Dr. Shimon Slavin, a stem cell pioneer and Science Advisory Board member of the Repair Stem Cell Institute had this study published in Acta Haematologica in 2005.
Considering the fact that foreign donor lymphocytes generated to become professional killer cells can eliminate cancer cells but can circulate in the patients' system only for a few days until rejection, one possible approach for more effective treatment of cancer that seems to be most promising is induction of a stage of minimal residual disease either at an early stage of the disease or by high dose chemoradiotherapy supported by autologous stem cell transplantation, followed by immunotherapy with intentionally mismatched donor lymphocytes activated to become most potent killer cells with the goal in mind to eliminate minimal residual disease. This paper describes the first patient with resistant leukemia cured using such an approach.
