Description

Dr. Shimon Slavin, a member of the Repair Stem Cell Institute and stem cell doctor along with Dr. Richard Burt, the American stem cell doctor at Northwestern had this study published in the Blood Journal in 2002.

In autoimmune diseases patients' own immune system cells turns against patients' tissues thus causing damage, depending on the organ that is being attacked. For patients with life threatening autoimmune diseases, the self-reactive immune system may be neutralized by reprogramming, based on the use of a two-step procedure. First, eliminating all lymphocytes, those that cause the autoimmune process included, followed by transplantation of patients' own adult stem cells. Stem cells mature in the patients' body in order to give rise to a new immune system which now will learn to live in peace with patients' tissues, similarly to the process of education of the immune system during fetal development during pregnancy which eliminates all immune system cells that may attack ones own tissues.
