From Kirk Douglas, Hollywood royalty and bestselling author of The Ragman’s Son and My Stroke of Luck, comes the candid story of the making of Spartacus, the blockbuster film that broke the blacklist.

A master storyteller, Douglas paints a vivid and often humorous portrait in I Am Spartacus! The book is enhanced by newly discovered period photography of the stars and filmmakers both on and off the set.

INTRODUCTION
What you learn about yourself
with the passing o time can’t betaught. It can only be experienced. You can never “know then what  you know now. When I look back at
Spartacus
today—more than ty years ater theact—I’m amazed that it ever happened at all. Everything was against us— the McCarthy-era politics, competition with another picture, everything. I am 95 years old. When I was born, Woodrow Wilson was in theWhite House. I’ve lived through sixteen presidents, two World Wars, theGreat Depression, and a score o political crises rom Teapot Dome toWatergate to Bill Clinton’s impeachment or being publicly serviced inthe White House.

One of my all time favourite films, this draws unbelievable parallels with modern history and is a watch word for the abuse of power by those who govern us. It seems that there is nothing new under the sun.
Theater and film have common frontiers in their passionate hearts, mavericks, dissidents, adventurous, outsiders and rebels, who bend the rules and take risks. Well done.

The only film I know to have come as close to this quality on all levels is Ridley Scott's Gladiator. Ustinov as the tragedy's clown is a bonus of a performance. Every performance was outstanding. Good screenplay writing by Trumbo deserved and got more than good performances to match. Hope the book does well in a sometimes tricky and finickity market.

A great movie to have been made. The restoration was probably much needed, for the closeups and the for long shots of rolling landscapes to be a beautiful assault on the eyes. Only the sea-ship stock footage of slaves sailing into Italy is a letdown. The script was intelligent, articulate, funny, touching, and bitter-sweet, as not too unlike real life. More to follow...
