Tennis Immediate Post Event Recovery
It is tennis tournament time at the moment in Australia-the Hopman Cup-the Australian Open-theBrisbane International and when our tennis season finishes there are the American series, FrenchOpen, Wimbledon, and many other tournaments both professional and amateurWith all these tournaments to attend, wear and tear on the body increases, not only through matchplay fatigue, but in long hours of airline travel and the muscle stiffness and soreness thataccompanies itMany players go straight from the airport to the courts with only a few hours to recover from theflight and it is into play that can last for hours, then with advancement through to the finals, time forrecovery is reducedRecovery is important for any sports person-the most effective time to get onto this is while themuscles are in the 'window of opportunity'- and are still warm and pliableIn the normal course of events there is very little injury other than small micro-tears in the over usedmuscle tissues-unless there has been a problem from an exterior sources such as impact or bio-mechanical causes (the running shoes, playing surface, blisters) to increase muscle stressAt this stage, the muscles will be sore and fatigued-, trained muscles are not injured in theconventional sense-working
on
them using conventional recovery systems may do more harm thangood because it interferes with the bodies own recovery processes which start as soon as themuscles stop being stressedThe greatest need of the muscles in immediate post event recovery is to get rid of by-products andwastes that have accumulated in the tissues-as they are removed, fresh blood enters the tissuesenhancing healingRecovered muscles allow the athlete to get back to their playing and training without theinconvenience they would normally associate with after-effects of intensive competition. The muscles being enlisted to assist in their own recoveryUsing conventional methods of recovery is not appropriate at this time and it may be ineffective asthese are being repaired by the body itself, any intrusive outside interference will slow this process. In the middle of a tournament is not when the repair process needs slowing down as it can reducethe competitive edge of the player and increase muscle fatigue
*Some research has shown that conventional systems do not help with recovery if it is done within 2 hours of the end of the event-but all agree the athlete is still benefiting from the psychological effect more than the physical as it gives aftercompetition winds down.
