Probes for hot-wire anemometry

Miniature wire
Pt-plated tungsten wire, diameter 5 m, length 1.25 mm. The sensor possesses great flow sensitivity and wide frequency response in turbulent flow. Miniature-wire probes are mainly intended for use in low-turbulence flows of temperatures up to 150oC and cover velocities up to 500 m/s in pure air.

Gold-plated wire
Pt-plated tungsten wire, diameter 5 m, overall length 3 mm. Sensitive wire length 1.25 mm. Copper and gold plated at the ends to a diameter at approx. 15 m. This sensor possesses the same high flow sensitivity and wide frequency response as the miniature wire but features considerably less prong-to-sensor influence due to its gold-plated wire ends. Probes with gold-plated wire sensors are specially suited for use in high-turbulence flows and cover velocities up to approx. 300 m/s in well-filtered air.

Fiber-film with thin quartz coating

Nickel film deposited on 70 m diameter quartz fiber. Overall length 3 mm, sensitive film length 1.25 mm. Copper and gold plated at the ends. Film is protected by quartz coating approx. 0.5 m in thickness. Fiber-film sensors possess higher robustness and are less susceptible to contamination than wire sensors but have lower frequency limit. Fiber-film with thin quartz coatings are for use in gases and non-conducting liquids where the demand for robustness eliminates the use of wire sensors. May be used at ambient temperatures up to 150oC.

Fiber-film with heavy quartz coating

Nickel film deposited on 70 m diameter quartz fiber. Overall length 3 mm, sensitive length 1.25 mm. Copper and gold plated at the ends. Film is protected by quartz coating approx. 2 m in thickness. Same advantages over wire sensors as fiber films with thin quartz coating but have lower upper frequency limit due to their heavier quartz coating. For use in conducting liquids covering velocities up to 10 m/s.

Film sensors with thin quartz coating

Nickel films deposited on wedge-shaped, conical or flat quartz rods. Approximate dimension of film 0.2 x 1 mm. Film is protected by quartz coating approx. 0.5 m in thickness. Film sensors on non-cylindrical substrates are very robust in comparison with both wire and fiber-film sensors with less tendency to foul in contaminated flows. For use in gases and non-conducting liquids at moderate and high velocities and at ambient temperatures up to 150oC.

Film sensors with heavy quartz coating

Nickel films deposited on wedge-shaped, conical and flat quartz rods. Approx. film dimension 0.2 x 1 mm. Film is protected by quartz coating approx. 2 m in thickness. These sensors possess the same characteristics as film sensors with thin quartz coating but have lower upper frequency limit due to their heavier quartz coating. For measurements in conducting liquids at velocities up to approx. 25 m/s and at ambient temperatures up to 150oC.
