Foreword
Computingtechnologyismoremobilethanever.ItsevolutionfromlargemainframestohandheldmobiledevicesoffersunprecedentedopportunitiestoadvancetheoperationaleffectivenessoftheDepartmentofDefense(DoD).Throughfasteraccesstoinformationandcomputingpowerfromanylocation,fieldunitscanmaneuverunfamiliarenvironmentswithreal-timemappinganddataoverlaycapabilities;soldierscanidentifyfriendlyforces;engineerscantakepicturesofmechanicalpartsforimmediateidentificationandreplacementordering;andmilitaryhealthcareproviderscandiagnoseinjuriesandremotelyaccesslabresultswhileawayfromhospitalpremises.Additionally,byenablingreal-timeaccesstoimportantmanagementandproductivitytools(e.g.,email,collaboration),warfightersupportfunctionscanbeusedtomorequicklyandresponsivelymanagethebusinessoftheDoD.Amobiledevice,forthepurposeofthisstrategy,isahandheldcomputingdevicewithadisplayscreenthatallowsforuserinput(e.g.,touchscreen,keyboard).Whenconnectedtoanetwork,itenablesthesharingofinformationinformatsspeciallydesignedtomaximizetheuseofinformationgivendevicelimitations(i.e.,screensize,computingpower).Mobiledevicesprovidetheconveniencesofconventionaldesktopsorlaptopcomputersinamoreportablepackage.Popularformfactorsformobiledevicesaresmartphonesandtablets.Awirelessinfrastructure,asreferencedinthisstrategy,issimplyanexpansionoftheDoDInformationEnterpriseinsupportofmobiledevices.Newandexistingwirelessnetworksmaybeleveragedcollectivelytoconnecttechnologiesorcapabilitiesasneeded.The

identifiesinformationtechnology(IT)goalsandobjectivestocapitalizeonthefullpotentialofmobiledevices.Itfocusesonimprovingthreeareascriticaltomobility:wirelessinfrastructure,themobiledeviceitself,andmobileapplications.ItallowsmobileactivitiesacrosstheDepartmenttoconvergetowardacommonvisionandapproach.Althoughmobiledevicesarethenewandpopularitemintoday'scommercialmarket,thisstrategyisnotsimplyaboutembracingthenewesttechnology-itisaboutkeepingtheDoDworkforcerelevantinanerawheninformationandcyberspaceplayacriticalroleinmissionsuccess.Thisstrategyprovidesthefoundationforthedevelopmentofpolicyandanimplementationplan.SuccessfulexecutionreliesonthecooperationandcollaborationofallDoDComponentsandonpartnershipswithfederal,intelligence,academia,andcommercialcommunities.Withyoursupport,wewillequipourforceswiththecapabilitytoquicklyaccessrelevantinformationwheneverandwhereverneeded.
