INTRODUCTION
TheserulesderivefromanexperimentalsetforbattlesbetweenRomansandCeltsdemonstratedbyPhilBarkeratthe1988SocietyofAncientsconference.Itsfavourablereceptionledtoamoregeneraltwopagerulesetcalled"DeBellisSocietatisAntiquorum"producedforaverysuccessfulandpopularcompetitionatthe1989conference.Thiscommercialversionextendsthecombatsystem,djfferentiatesafewextratrooptypes,includesfullerexplanationofproceduresandphilosophythanprovedpossible
in
twopagesandincorporatesset-upinformation,acampaignsystembyRichardBodleyScottandsuggestedcompositionsforallimportantarmiesbetween3000BCand1485AD.Wehopethatitwillproveacceptableboth.asa.nintroductionfornewplayersandasatonicforthejaded.Ourintentistoprovidethesimplestpossiblesetofwarga.mesrulesthatretainthefeelandgeneralshiprequirementsofancientormedievalbattle.Therulemechanismsusedareentirelynew.Theystartfromtheassumptionsthattheresultsofcommanddecisionscanbeshownratherthantheminutiaofhoworderswerecomunicatedandinterpreted,thattheproportionsofdifferenttroopsfieldedweredecidedbyavailabilitywithintheircultureandnotcost-effectivenessagainstacurrentopponent,thatdifferencesbetweentroopsofthesameclassanderawererelativelyunimportant,andthatmostshootingregardlessoftheoreticalweaponrangewasatveryshortdistances.Theresultingsystemismoresubtlethanmaybeimmediatelyapparent,andisthefruitofmuchdetaileddevelopmentwork.Theaverageplayerhasmemorisedthebattlerulespartwaythroughhisfirstgame,buttacticalskiU,espe-ciallyintheuseoflighttroops,takeslongertodevelop.Agamelastslessthananhour,sothatafiveround.conventioncompetitioncouldbecompletedinonedayandstillleaveplentyoftimeforvisitingthetradestands.Sinceallbattlesendinoutrightvictory,theorganiser'sworkisminimised.Campaignsforuptosixhistoricallyopposedarmiescanalsobecompletedinasingleday

DESIGNPHILOSOPHY
Thefunctionofthecommandandcommunicationssysteminawargameisexactlyoppositefromthatinreallifebattleinthatitisused,nottoenablethegeneraltomanoeuvrehistroopsatall,buttopreventhimdoingsotoofreely.Thatoftheserules

arbitrary.butitsresultsareverysimilartothosefrommoreelaboratesystemsincorporatingwrittenorders.transmissionbyalimitednumberofmessengersorsignals,andthentestinginterpretationonreceipt.
