Plate martensite The habit plane changes from 225 at 1,0-1,4% C concentration to 259 at carbon concentration in excess of 1,5%.

The addition of Ni, Pt, and Mn tends to favor the transition to plate martensite, but Si, Cr, W, V and Mo prevent its formation. In high carbon steel, the martensite is found to be exclusively plate or lenticular martensite. This is associted with lower Ms temperature and more retained austenite (Fig.8.28). In the medium and high carbon steels, martensite consists of lenticular plates with a core, called the midrib, wthin them. The midrib is planar and nearly parallel, occasionally to 225 habit. The high Nickel 259, martensite also contains the midrib. In general, 225 martensites are partially twinned, while 259 martensites are completely twinned. Note the midrib is the plane where initiation of the transformation occurs and that the interface advances on either side in the opposite direction by means of ledges parallel to the midrib plane. Figure 8.26 is aTypical transmission electron micrograph of plate martensite in a 1,28% C steel showing variaton size and fine structure of parallel 112 type twins. figure 8.29 shows the optical micrograph of the lenticular plate martensite in Fe-33.2 Ni alloy where internal twins are revealed by deep etching. Unlike lath , plate-type ferrous usually forms in a self-accommodating manner consisting of several habit-plane variants. As a result we observed non-parallel plates with relatively large size differences.
