In my case, I wasissued a steel pod helmet that washardly ever worn and was summarilyreplaced by the ubiquitous booniehat, and the all too heavy andineffective flak jacket.That same rational holds true forballistic eye protection; extendingthat thought process, a soldierwearing dark lenses will remove hiseye protection when he enters a caveor dark structure and will remainunprotected for the duration of thatoperation. So, lenses that transitionfrom dark to light and vice versa weresorely needed. However, any old
