On November 1, 2011 President Obamanominated Rebecca Blank to be the DeputyCommerce Secretary.While Blank’s faith in government is strong, herfaith in the private sector is not.Blank scoffs atthe notion thatcharities andthe privatesector canchannel peoplefrom welfare towork andargues for agovernmentalrole. “At theend of the day, it is going tobe government-runprograms that help mostpublic-assistance clientsprepare for and find work,”she writes. Fn.1.Blank said a private nursinghome, for example, mayprovide a cheaper and fasteralternative that can get the job done, but governmentservices usually can providemore -- that extra late-nightconversationwith a patient, forexample.
